To Chinese immigrants, in the mid-1800s, California was “The Land of the Golden Mountain.” In their homeland they had heard the words, “There’s gold in California.” They sailed 7,000miles to join the gold rush and strike it rich. Between 1849 and 1882, more than 30,000 Chinese came to California. Most were men. They had been farmers in China. They came here to be miners and laborers. They ended up doing many other jobs, too.

Like many other immigrants, they did not plan to stay in America. They came because of their ties to their homeland and their families. They planned to return to China with their fortunes and help their families.

Only a few Chinese gold miners struck it rich. Most picked over the areas that had been mined already. But still, white miners resented the Chinese. Slowly, they drove the “yellow peril” from the mining camps.

By the end of the 1850s, many Chinese returned home. Those who stayed found other jobs.

Few women had come west in the gold rush. The Chinese saw a good business opportunity. They began doing the jobs women would have done. Many became house servants. Many more opened laundries.

The Chinese opened restaurants. Chop suey and show mein are popular Chinese-American dishes. The Chinese probably created these dishes to serve to the white miners. Other Chinese became fishermen, farmers, and even cigar makers. 1. Why did Chinese go to America in the mid-1800s? A. Because they could find good jobs there. B. Because they had found gold there.

C. Because they could open laundries and restaurants there. D. Because they heard there was gold there.

2. The underlined word “resented” mean “________”. A. liked B. helped C. hated

3. Which of the following was NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Some Chinese became drivers.

B. Many Chinese opened shops to help wash clothes. C. Many Chinese picked gold around the old mines.

D. Many Chinese returned to China by the end of the 1850s. 4. Which should be the title of the passage? A. Early Chinese immigrants in America B. Dream to strike it rich

Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediate liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a people based on the color of a person’s skin or the manner in which he or she dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.

Nonverbal communication is important because we use the actions of others to learn about their affective emotional states .Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—be it fear, joy, anger, or sadness—so we can express them without ever saying a word .For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes. Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(感知) of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and sexual partners is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affect

ed by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to embrace each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. People smile at times. However, the meaning of a smile in different cultures may be different. Depending on different cultures, smiling can express joy and amusement, but it can also indicate embarrassment. The following examples show this point of view: In an attempt to be open and friendly, people in the United States smile a lot. Every one smiles at each other, this nonverbal communication shows being friendly in the United States. However,in China, smiling is not only an expression of happiness, but also a way to avoid being embarrassed. Chinese people like smiling when they are embarrassed in order to avoid embarrassment. Smiling is a kind of good will but not sneer(嘲笑). For example: When a child falls off from a bike, the adults in China may smile, which is a kind of gentle encouragement and may not be a kind of impolite laugh.

When a person from the United States might blush(脸红)with embarrassment or become offensive, a Chinese might blush with smile. To avoid serious misunderstanding, people who engage in intercultural communication should be able to understand the meaning of smiling appropriately. Related to the smile is the laugh. All over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners. Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners.

Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quite quiet if grown-ups were talking. Today, well-mannered children have more freedom. Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places.

Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp” after you finish eating. Burping would show that you liked your food.

In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say “excuse me, please.”

In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat.

What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.

Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent. If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one. Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other.

To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.

Most schools in England take football seriously-much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education is not only a matter filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means the training of character; and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games; where a boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team, instead of working for oneself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That’s why it is every school’s game in England.

16. In passage 1, by “this” the author means ________. A. people often go to football games.

B. people, rich and poor, young and old, play football C. football is the most popular game in England

D. people usually shout at each other in a football match 17. In England school boys seem _________ about football games. A. not to know much B. to know a great deal C. know little D. know nothing

18. In England, a boy’s opinion of a match is often ________. A. three or four times better than that of adults B. wore than that of adults C. as good as that of adults

D. worth considering three or four times than adults 19. In almost all European schools, lessons are_______. A. left for the children themselves B. what the children like best C. as important as football games D. considered the most important

20. In England, education means_______. A. filling a boy’s mind with stories B. more than the teaching of knowledge C. the teaching of knowledge only

D. training character by means of football games 【答案解析】 16. C

Any diet on which you eat fewer calories than you need to get through the day — like an 800-calorie-per-day diet can be dangerous. Diets that don't allow any fat also can be bad for you. Everyone needs a certain amount of fat in their diet — up to 30% of total calories — so no one should eat a completely fat-free diet.

Don't have diets that restrict (限制)certain food groups, either. A diet that requires you to say no to bread or pasta or allows you to eat only fruit is unhealthy. You won't get the vitamins and minerals you need. And although you may lose weight, you'll probably gain it back as soon as you start eating normally again.

Some people start dieting because they think all the problems in their lives are because of weight. Others have an area of their lives that they can't control, like an alcoholic parent, so they focus on something they can control — their exercise and food intake.

People who diet may get lots of praise from friends and family when they start losing pounds, which makes them feel good. But eventually a person reaches a weight level — and doesn't lose as much weight as before because the body is trying to keep a healthy weight, so they aren't any happier.

Some people may find it hard to control their eating, so they stick with an extreme diet for a little while, but then eat tons of food. Feeling guilty about the binge, they use laxatives(泻药). Eating too little to maintain a healthy weight or eating only to throw up the calories are both eating disorders, which are harmful to a person's health.

1. Which is not the result of restricting certain food groups? A. lose weight for a short period B. unhealthy C. short of nutrition D. hungry

2. The reasons why some people start and keep dieting DON’T include__________. A. They think their trouble comes from their weight. B. They have an alcoholic parent.

C. Other people’s praise when they lose some weight.

D. There is something they can’t control except food intake. 3. The underlined phrase in the last paragraph refers to _________. A. a fat-free diet B. a special diet C. eating too much D. eating too little 4. Which of the following statements is true?

A. A person needs about 800 calories each day. B. A person who doesn’t eat bread is unhealthy. C. An improper diet may cause eating disorder.

D. Fat takes up the most part of calories inside body.

5. According to the passage, when people want to lose weight, they should_________. A. avoid eating some food that can lead to being fat B. control their eating amount and times

C. have a healthy and balanced diet D. throw up some of what they eat

【答案解析】 1. D

本题为词义猜测题。根据本句后面的but then eat tons of food以及最后一句中的Eating too little to maintain a healthy weight可知答案为D项。 4. C

Marie Curie was a Polish physicist and chemist who lived between 1867-1934. Together with her husband, Pierre, she discovered two new elements (radium and polonium, two radioactive elements that they extracted chemically from pitchblende ore) and studied the x-rays they emitted. She found that the harmful properties of x-rays were able to kill tumors. By the end of World War I, Marie Curie was probably the most famous woman in the world. She had made a conscious decision, however, not to patent methods of processing radium or its medical applications.

Marie Curie was born November 7, 1867 in Poland and died on July 4, 1934. Her co-discovery with her husband Pierre Curie of the radioactive elements radium and polonium represents one of the best known stories in modern science for which they were recognized in 1901 with the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1911, Marie Curie was honored with a second Nobel prize, this time in chemistry, to honor her for successfully isolating pure radium and determining radium's atomic weight.

As a child, Marie Curie amazed people with her great memory. She learned to read when she was only four years old. Her father was a professor of science and the instruments that he kept in a glass case fascinated Marie. She dreamed of becoming a scientist, but that would not be easy. Her family became very poor, and at the age of 18, Marie became a governess. She helped pay for her sister to study in Paris. Later, her sister helped Marie with her education. In 1891, Marie attended the Sorbonne University in Paris where she met and married Pierre Curie, a well-known physicist.

BRISBANE—Australian Olympic chief John Coates has said Greek athlete Katerina Thanou should not be awarded the Sydney Olympics 100 metres gold medal handed back by Marion Jones.

Jones, who this week admitted to steroid(类固醇)use in the build up to the Sydney Games, has returned the three gold medals and two bronzes she won in 2000.

But Thanou, the silver medalist in Sydney, was herself banned for two years after she failed to appear for a drug test at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

“I’d like to think that Katerina Thanou would not be awarded the gold medal,” Coates told the Australian Associated Press on Tuesday, “but there may be some legal difficulties for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to overcome in order to reach that conclusion.”

Jamaica’s Tayna Lawrence won the 100m bronze medal in Sydney behind Jones and Thanou.

Coates also said he expected the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to hand back the medals won by the women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.

Two of Jones’s team mates in the 4x100m team which finished third in Sydney, Torri Edwards and Chryste Gaines, have also served doping(兴奋剂)bans.

The U.S. women’s 4x100m relay team won the gold medal ahead of Jamaica and Russia. “On the relays, it’s my expectation that the United States Olympic Committee will be required to also hand back the medals won by the other ladies who competed with Jones in the two relays,” Coates said. “That is normal practice.”

The United States Olympic Committee (USCO) has publicly apologized to the organizers and competitors of the 2000 Sydney Games and the Australian public for Jones’s actions.

As part of the USOC’s apology, president Peter Ueberroth promised that the U.S. would send a clean team to next year’s Beijing Olympics. 1. What is the best title of the passage? A. Jones has returned the Sydney medals B. Thanou should not receive Sydney gold C. Steroid use at Sydney Olympics

D. Jones also took part in the women’s 4x100m relay race.

4. Why did Coates expect the USOC to hand back the medals won in the relay races? A. Because the IOC required them to do so.

YOU don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough.

The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour (US$140) for lessons on how to feel great.

“You can actually increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, founder of the institute.

Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships.

Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven’t changed to reflect that.

Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness.

Many decades ago, the “sage of Baltimore, Maryland”, editor HL Mencken, defined wealth as earning US$100 more than your “wife’s sister’s husband.”

Behavioral economists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is because we compare ourselves to people better off materially.

“The argument is that if you want to be happy there’s a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, car,” said Sharp.

The Happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing on “more than just your bank account.”

“If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I’m always going to be down,” said Sharp. A better thing to compare with, he said, might be Kerry Packer, Australia’s richest person who has had a kidney transplant and heart surgery in recent years. 1. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. You can increase your happiness levels by attending the classes at the Happiness Institute.

B. Most of us are happier than our parents or grandparents since we earn more. C. Earning US$ 100 more than your wife’s sister’s husband if you want to be happy.

D. Both Bill Gates and Kerry Packer are examples of those who are extremely rich but obviously unhappy.

2. The underlined phrase has the same meaning as the word _______. A. healthy B. unhealthy C. free D. wealthy 3. The author wrote the passage to tell us _______. A. happiness is everything

B. wealth is the foundation of happiness C. have fun at the Happiness Institute D. money doesn’t always mean happiness B

Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some

questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these top

ics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.

Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.

A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations B. that we must speak loudly

C. that we must keep silent at any time D. that we must talk with the class D

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?” I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.

“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”

“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.

“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.

“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.

“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”

She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”. She challenged each of us to study the lyrics(歌词)and live them out in our daily lives.

At the year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep. 13. Rose made herself known to the author in a ______ manner. A. serious B. cold C. humorous D. crazy

Herds of zebra, impala and giraffe from South Africa’s Kruger Park found a new home as part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP) wildlife relocation project. About 1,000 animals, from the large blue wildebeest to the stocky warthog, have been relocated to the park straddling South African, Mozambican and Zimbabwean territory.

The game from South Africa arrived in the Massingir area of Mozambique’s southern Maputo province after a one-and-a-half-hour trip by truck.

South African National Parks chief executive Mavuso Msimang and the Peace Parks Foundation officially handed over the animals to Mozambican representatives.

“This project is not only about the management of an ecosystem, but also about community empowerment and tourism,” Msimang said.

Border fences are coming down with the establishment of the park, which will be the world’s biggest game reserve, to allow elephants and other herds to follow ancient migration routes.

The park, due to be officially opened next year, will be bigger than the Netherlands, covering some 38,600 square kilometers(15,440 square miles).

Under a three-year plan, about 6,000 animals are to be moved into the area, where wildlife was decimated(大批杀害)during Mozambique’s 25-year civil war.

African Wildlife Foundation community development officer Jeremiah Machavi said 62 communities living in the area would be affected by the establishment of Transfrontier Park. Tourists will be able to travel across international boundaries in the park without having to show their passports.

The relocation process started in October last year when about 30 elephants were released into the park.

Job were still hard to come by for most blacks. He longed to work on a ship that would sail abroad. After much persistence, he headed to Africa on a freighter ( 货船 ). Hughes was disturbed by the African tribes’ lack of political and economical freedom. The Africans considered him white because of his brown skin and stranded dark hair. Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or sleep restfully. It is a problem to nearly everyone at some time .A person may be awake for an hour in the middle of the night and then , next morning, feel that he hardly sleep all night Normally, worry about not getting enough sleep is the worst aspect of most insomnia. If insomnia is recurrent, however, it is important to find its causes and try to correct them, with the help of a doctor if necessary.

Any of a large number of simple factors may take it difficult for someone to fall asleep or remain asleep. His matters may be too soft or too hard. If there are too many blankets on a hot night, he may be too warm; if the bedclothes are too light he may feel cold during the night. If it is not dark enough, or too noisy, this may cause difficulty in sleeping. Eating shortly before going to bed also be responsible for insomnia. Stimulating drinks, such as tea or coffee, can also keep people awake.

Inability to fall asleep is sometimes a symptom of emotional or mental disorders. Insomnia may also be caused by pain and, very rarely, it can be a symptom of a physical disease.

The cause of insomnia may be easy to correct. The sufferer should check the mattress, bedclothes and bedroom temperature, and make any necessary changes. An eye mask keeps out the night and ear-plugs shut out sound. He should relax for an hour or two before bedtime, perhaps by reading a book; watching TV, or taking a warm bath. If he wakes during the night he should try turning on the light and reading for a while. Taking warm milk and a biscuit or two may be helpful. Above all, he should try not to worry about sleeplessness when someone is tied enough he nearly always falls asleep.

If necessary, a doctor may prescribe tranquillisers or sleeping pills. Take only the dosage he prescribes; any more is dangerous. 4. According to the writer, insomnia is ______. A. a rare problem B. a sign of illness C. a common complaint D. a modern disease

Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星) now,one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it,say some scientists.?

Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids(流星)that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don't threaten us. But there are also thousands whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.?

Buy $ 50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $ 10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one,the scientists say,we'll have a way to change its course.?

Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn't be cheap.?

Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare-but if one did fall,it would be the end of the world. “If we don't take care of these big asteroids, they'll take care of us,”says one scientist. “It's that simple.”?

The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “The world has less to fear from doomsday(毁灭性的)

rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.

8. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids? A. They are heavenly bodies different in composition. B. They are heavenly bodies similar in nature. C. There are more asteroids than meteoroids. D. Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids. 9. We can conclude from the passage that_____ .

A. while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world B. asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future

C. the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime

D. workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth.

Tae kwon do(跆拳道) is the Korean martial(军事的)art of hand-to-hand combat(战斗). Maybe that should really be body-to-body combat because in tae kwon do the whole body must be trained to properly defend and attack. There are some similarities between tae kwon do and other martial arts.

For example, tae kwon do uses quick straight-line moves which can also be found in Japanese martial arts, but tae kwon do also uses flowing circular moves like the type of moves found in Chinese martial arts. The main difference between tae kwon do and other martial arts is the powerful kicking technique which tae kwon do uses. This is where the name tae kwon do comes from.In Korean, tae means “to kick”,kwon means “to stri

ke with the hand”,and do means “art”.Therefore, tae kwon do can be translated as “the art of kicking and punching”.

Paintings found on the walls and ceilings of ancient Korean tombs in-dicate that tae kwon do,or something similar to it,has been practiced in Korea since about 50 B.C.Also, records of a specially trained group of young warriors called Hwarang explain how these young men were taught taek kyon(an early form of tae kwon do)along with history, philosophy, ethics, archery, riding, and sword fighting.Members of the Hwarang were also encouraged to travel throughout Korea in order to learn about the people who lived in all regions of the country. This helped spread the practice of taek kyon throughout Korea.Eventually taek kyon, which was practiced for exercise and sport was replaced by subak, another martial art .The purpose of subak was specifically fighting,so members of the military were required to learn it.However, people's interest in subak died out over time.By the 1800s,few Koreans actually practiced subak. After Korea was invaded in 1909,authorities put an end to the practice of all martial arts in the country. In the long run, this ban actually led to increased interest in martial arts, and secret groups began to practice subak again in the Buddhist temples hidden high in the mountains in Korea. After Korea gained its independence again in 1948,interest in many forms of martial arts grew around the country. The Korean Tae Kwon Do Association was formed in 1961,and this was followed by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation in 1973.

Where is that noise coming from? Not sure? Try living with your eyes closed for a few years.

Blind people are better at locating sounds than people who can see, a new study says, without the benefits of vision the ears seem to work much better.

Previous studies have shown that blind people are better than others at reaching out and touching the sources of sounds that are close by. Researchers from the University of Montreal wanted to see if blind people were also better at locating sounds that are far away.

Twenty-three blind people participated in the study. All had been sightless for at least 20 years. Fourteen of them had lost their vision before age 11. the rest went blind after age 16. The experiment also included 10 people who could see but were wearing blind-folds.

In one task, volunteers had to pick the direction of a sound coming from about 3 metres away. When the sound was in front of them or slightly off center in front, both groups performed equally well.

When sounds came from the side or the back, however, the blind group performed much better than the blindfolded group. The participants who had been blind since childhood did slightly better than those who lost their sight later.

Recognizing the locations of distant sounds can be a matter of life-or-death for blind people, say the researchers. Crossing the street, for instance, is much harder when you can’t see the cars coming.

Still, the researchers were surprised by how well the blind participants did, especially those who went blind after age 16. In another experiment, the scientists also found that parts of the brain that normally deal with visual information became active in locating sound in the people who were blind by age 11. These brain parts didn’t show sound-location activity in the other group of blind people or in the sighted people. The scientists now want to learn more about the working of brains of “late-onset” blind people.
