Electric-Resistance-WeldedSteelPipe1ThisstandardisissuedunderthefixeddesignationA135;thenumberimmediatelyfollowingthedesignationindicatestheyearoforiginaladoptionor,inthecaseofrevision,theyearoflastrevision.Anumberinparenthesesindicatestheyearoflastreapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon(e)indicatesaneditorialchangesincethelastrevisionorreapproval.ThisstandardhasbeenapprovedforusebyagenciesoftheDepartmentofDefense.

1.Scope*

1.1Thisspecification2coverstwogradesofelectric-resistance-weldedsteelpipeinNPS2toNPS30inclusive,withnominal(average)wallthicknessupto0.500in.(12.70mm),inclusive,andinnominalsizesNPS3⁄4toNPS5inclusivewithnominal(average)wallthickness0.083in.(2.11mm)to0.134in.(3.40mm),dependingonsize.Pipehavingotherdimensions(Note1)maybefurnishedprovidedsuchpipecomplieswithallotherrequirementsofthisspecification.Thepipeisintendedforconveyinggas,vapor,waterorotherliquid;onlyGradeAisadaptedforflangingandbending(Note2).Thesuitabilityofpipeforvariouspurposesissomewhatdependentuponitsdimensions,properties,andconditionsofservice,sothatthepurposeforwhichthepipeisintendedshouldbestatedintheorder.Thepipemaybefurnishedeithernonexpandedorcoldexpandedattheoptionofthemanufac-turer.Whenpipeiscoldexpanded,theamountofexpansionshallnotexceed1.5%oftheoutsidediameterpipesize.

5.Manufacture

5.1Thesteelshallbemadebyeitherorbothofthefollowingprocesses:basic-oxygenorelectric-furnace.

5.2Steelmaybecastiningotsormaybestrandcast.Whensteelsofdifferentgradesaresequentiallystrandcast,identifi-2

cationoftheresultanttransitionmaterialisrequired.Theproducershallremovethetransitionmaterialbyanyestab-lishedprocedurethatpositivelyseparatesthegrades.

5.3Thepipeshallbemanufacturedfromflatrolledsteelinindividuallengthsorincontinuouslengthbyelectric-resistanceorelectric-inductionweldingwithouttheadditionofextrane-ousmaterial.

5.4Theweldseamofelectric-resistanceweldedpipetoGradeBpipeshallbeheattreatedafterweldingtoaminimumtemperatureof1000°F(540°C)orprocessedinsuchamannerthatnountemperedmartensiteremains.

6.ChemicalComposition

6.1ThesteelshallconformtotherequirementsprescribedinTable2,basedontheheatanalysis.Whenspecifiedintheorder,theheatanalysesshallbereportedtothepurchaserorarepresentativeofthepurchaser.

7.ProductAnalysis

7.1Ananalysismaybemadebythepurchaseronsamplesofpipeselectedatrandomandshallconformtotherequire-mentsspecifiedinTable2.MethodsandPracticesrelatingtochemicalanalysisshallbeinaccordancewithTestMethod,Practices,andTerminologyA751.

8.MechanicalPropertiesRequirements8.1TensileProperties:

8.1.1ThematerialshallconformtotherequirementsastotensilepropertiesprescribedinTable1.

8.1.2Theyieldstrengthshallbedeterminedbytheoffsetmethodutilizing0.2%ofthegagelengthorbythetotalextensionunderloadmethodusing0.5%ofthegagelength.8.1.3Longitudinaltestspecimensshallbefull-sizelongitu-dinaltestspecimens(seeFigureA2.1ofTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370)orlongitudinalstriptestspecimens(seeSpecimenNo.4inFig.A2.3ofTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370).

8.2Thetestspecimentakenacrosstheweldshallshowatensilestrengthnotlessthantheminimumtensilestrengthspecifiedforthegradeofpipeordered.ThistestwillnotberequiredforpipeunderNPS8.

9.FlatteningTest

9.1Aspecimenatleast4in.(102mm)inlengthshallbeflattenedcoldbetweenparallelplatesinthreestepswiththeweldlocatedeither0°or90°fromthelineofdirectionofforceasrequiredin9.2.Duringthefirststep,whichisatestforductilityoftheweld,nocracksorbreaksontheinsideoroutsidesurfacesshalloccuruntilthedistancebetweentheplatesislessthantwothirdsoftheoriginaloutsidediameterofthepipe.Asasecondstep,theflatteningshallbecontinued.Duringthesecondstep,whichisatestforductilityexclusiveoftheweld,nocracksorbreaksontheinsideoroutsidesurfacesshalloccuruntilthedistancebetweentheplatesislessthanonethirdoftheoriginaloutsidediameterofthepipebutisnotlessthanfivetimesthewallthicknessofthepipe.Duringthethirdstep,whichisatestforsoundness,theflatteningshallbecontinueduntilthespecimenbreaksortheoppositewallsofthepipemeet.Evidenceoflaminatedorunsoundmaterialorofincompleteweldthatisrevealedduringtheentireflatteningtestshallbecauseforrejection.

9.2Forpipeproducedinsinglelengths,theflatteningtestspecifiedin9.1shallbemadeonbothcropendscutfromeachlengthofpipe.Thetestsfromeachendshallbemadealternatelywiththeweldat0°andat90°fromthelineofdirectionofforce.Forpipeproducedinmultiplelengths,theflatteningtestshallbemadeoncropendsrepresentingthefrontandbackofeachcoilwiththeweldat90°fromthelineofdirectionofforce,andontwointermediateringsrepresentingeachcoilwiththeweld0°fromthelineofdirectionofforce.9.3Surfaceimperfectionsinthetestspecimenbeforeflat-tening,butrevealedduringthefirststepoftheflatteningtest,shallbejudgedinaccordancewiththefinishrequirementsinSection13.

9.4Superficialcracksasaresultofsurfaceimperfectionsshallnotbecauseforrejection.

10.HydrostaticTest

10.1Exceptasprovidedforin10.3,eachlengthofpipeshallbehydrostaticallytestedatthemill,withoutleakagethroughthewall,toapressurecalculatedfromthefollowingEq1:

10.4Whencertificationisrequiredbythepurchaserandthehydrostatictesthasbeenomitted,thecertificationshallclearlystate“NotHydrostaticallyTested.”Thespecificationnumberandmaterialgrade,asshownonthecertification,shallbefollowedbytheletters“NH.”

11.NondestructiveExaminationRequirements

11.1Asanalternatetothehydrostatictest,andwhenacceptedbythepurchaser,eachpipeshallbetestedwithanondestructiveelectrictestinaccordancewithPracticeE213,PracticeE273,orPracticeE309.Itistheintentofthistesttorejectpipecontainingdefects.

11.2Recognizedmethodsformeetingthistestareelectro-magnetic(eddycurrent)orultrasonic.

11.3Thefollowinginformationisforthebenefitoftheuserofthisspecification:

11.3.1Theultrasonicexaminationreferredtointhisspeci-ficationisintendedtodetectlongitudinalimperfectionshavingareflectiveareasimilartoorlargerthanthereferencenotch.Theexaminationmaynotdetectcircumferentiallyorientedimperfectionsofshort,deepimperfections.

11.3.2Theeddy-currentexaminationreferencedinthisspecificationhasthecapabilityofdetectingsignificantimper-fections,especiallyoftheshort,abrupttype.

11.3.3ThehydrostatictestreferredtoinSection10isatestmethodprovidedforinmanyproductspecifications.Thistesthasthecapabilityoffindingimperfectionsofasizepermittingthetestfluidtoleakthroughthetubewallandmaybeeithervisuallyseenordetectedbyalossofpressure.Thistestmaynotdetectverytight,through-the-wallimperfectionsorimper-fectionsthatextendanappreciabledistanceintothewallwithoutcompletepenetration.

11.3.4Apurchaserinterestedinascertainingthenature(type,size,location,andorientation)ofimperfectionsthatcanbedetectedinthespecificapplicationoftheseexaminationsshoulddiscussthiswiththemanufacturerofthetubularproduct.

11.4Inordertoaccommodatethevarioustypesofnonde-structiveelectrictestingequipmentandtechniquesinuse,thecalibrationpipeshallcontain,attheoptionoftheproducer,anyoneormoreofthefollowingdiscontinuitiestoestablishaminimumsensitivitylevelforrejection:

11.4.1DrilledHole—Aholenotlargerthan0.031-in.(0.8-mm)diametershallbedrilledradiallyandcompletelythroughpipewall,preferablyintheweldarea,carebeingtakentoavoiddistortionofthepipewhiledrilling.

11.4.2TransverseTangentialNotch—Anotchshallbefiledormilledtangentialtothesurfaceandtransversetothelongitudinalaxisofthepipepreferablyintheweldarea.Saidnotchshallhaveadepthnotexceeding12.5%ofthenominalwallthicknessofthepipeor0.004in.,(0.10mm),whicheverisgreater.

11.4.3LongitudinalNotch—Anotch0.031in.(0.8mm)orlessinwidthshallbemachinedinaradialplaneparalleltothepipeaxisontheoutsidesurfaceofthepipepreferablyintheweldarea,tohaveadepthnotexceeding12.5%ofthenominalwallthicknessofthepipeor0.004in.(0.10mm),whicheverisgreater.

11.5Pipeproducingasignalequaltoorgreaterthanthecalibrationimperfectionshallberejected.

12.Dimensions,Weight,andPermissibleVariations12.1Weight—TheweightofanylengthofpipeotherthanSchedule10shallnotvarymorethan3.5%underor10%overthatspecified,butthecarloadweightshallbenotmorethan1.75%underthenominalweight.TheweightofpipefurnishedtoSchedule10shallnotvarymorethan610%fromthatcalculatedusingtheweight(mass)perunitlengthprescribedinAppendixTableX1.1.TheweightofthepipeshallbecalculatedfromtherelevantequationinASMEB36.10andwithaconstantof10.69ratherthan10.68.

NOTE4—AsystemofstandardpipesizeshasbeenapprovedbytheAmericanNationalStandardsInstituteasAmericanNationalStandardforWeldedandSeamlessWroughtSteelPipe(ASMEB36.10).

12.2Diameter—Theoutsidediametershallnotvarymorethan61%fromthenominalsizespecified.

12.3MinimumWallThickness—Theminimumwallthick-nessatanypointshallbenotmorethan12.5%underthespecifiedwallthickness.

NOTE5—TheminimumwallthicknessoninspectionisshowninTableX1.2oftheAppendix.

12.4Lengths:

12.4.1Exceptasallowedin12.4.2,pipeshallbefurnishedinlengthsaveraging38ft(11.6m)orover,withaminimumlengthof20ft(6.1m),butnomorethan5%maybeunder32ft(9.8m).Jointersmadebyweldingarepermissible.Whenthreadedpipeisordered,jointersshallbemadebythreadedconnectionsandshallnotexceed5%oftheorder.

12.4.2Unlessotherwisespecified,Schedule10pipeshallbebetween16and22ft(4.9and6.7m)foraminimumof90%ofthefootagefurnished,withanybalancebeingshorterlengthsatleast8ft(2.4m)long.

13.Workmanship,Finish,andAppearance

13.1Thefinishedpipeshallbereasonablystraightandfreeofdefects.Surfaceinperfectionsinexcessof12.5%ofthenominalwallthicknessshallbeconsidereddefects.13.2EndFinish:

13.2.1Schedule10Pipe—PipefurnishedtoSchedule10shallbeplainendonly.Allinsideandoutsidecuttingburrsshallberemoved.Thisgenerallyinvolvesbreakingthecorners.13.2.2Ends,PlainEndPipe—Unlessotherwisespecified,plainendpipeforusewiththeDresserorDaytontypecouplingshallbereamedbothoutsideandinsidesufficientlytoremoveallburrs.Plainendpipeforweldingshallbebeveledontheoutsidetoanangleof30°withatoleranceof+5°and–0°andwithawidthofflatattheendofthepipeof1⁄16+/–1⁄32in.(1.6+/–0.8mm).Whenmaterialisorderedbeveledtoanyotherthana30°angle,itshouldbeunderstoodthattheangleistobemeasuredfromalinedrawnperpendiculartotheaxisofthepipe.Thismeansthatagreateramountofmaterialisremovedwitha60°anglethanwitha30°angle.Pipeshallbesufficientlyfreefromindentations,projections,orrollmarksforadistanceof8in.(203mm)fromtheendofthepipetomakeatightjointwiththerubbergaskettypeofcoupling.AllplainendpipeintendedforDresserorDaytontypejointsorforwelding,sizesNPS10andsmallerinoutsidediameterspeci-fied,shallbenotmorethan1⁄32in.(0.8mm)smallerthantheoutsidediameterspecifiedforadistanceof8in.(203mm)fromtheendsofthepipeandshallpermitthepassingforadistanceof8in.(203mm)ofaringgagethathasabore1⁄16in.(1.6mm)largerthantheoutsidediameterspecifiedofthepipe.SizeslargerthanNPS10shallbenotmorethan1⁄32in.(0.8mm)smallerthanthenominaloutsidediameterforadistanceof8in.(203mm)fromtheendofthepipeandshallpermitthepassingforadistanceof8in.(203mm)ofaringgagewhichhasabore3⁄32in.(2.4mm)largerthanthenominaloutsidediameterofthepipe.

13.2.3Ends,ThreadedPipe—Eachendofthreadedpipeshallbereamedtoremoveallburrs.AllthreadsshallbeinaccordancewiththeAmericanNationalStandardPipeThreads(Note6)andcutsoastomakeatightjointwhenthepipeistestedatthemilltothespecifiedinternalhydrostaticpressure.Thevariationfromthestandard,whentestedwiththestandardworkinggage,shallnotexceedoneandone-halfturnseitherway.Pipeshallnotberoundedbyhammeringinordertogetafullthread.Thereshallbenotmorethantwoblackthreadsfor3⁄4-in.(19.0-mm)taperamongtheperfectthreads.Blackthreadsshouldnotbeconfusedwithimperfectthreads,suchasthosetorn,shaven,orbroken.

13.3Couplings—EachlengthofthreadedpipeshallbeprovidedwithonecouplingmanufacturedinaccordancewithSpecificationA865exceptthatthecouplingmaybewroughtiron(Note7).Threadsshallbecutsoastomakeatightjoint.Taper-tappedcouplingsshallbefurnishedonallweightsofthreadedpipeNPS21⁄2andlarger.

15.4.1Eachlengthofpipeshallbesubjectedtothehydro-statictestspecifiedinSection10.

16.Test,Retest,andResampling16.1ChemicalAnalysis:

16.1.1IftheresultsoftheanalysisofeitherlengthofpipedoesnotconformtotherequirementsspecifiedinSection7,analysesoftwoadditionallengthsfromthesamelotshallbemade,eachofwhichshallconformtotherequirementsspecified.

16.2TensionTest:

16.2.1ThetestspecimensandthetestsrequiredbythisspecificationshallconformtothosedescribedinTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370,exceptthatallspecimensshallbetestedatroomtemperature.

16.2.2Thelongitudinaltensiontestspecimenshallbetakenfromtheendofthepipe,orbyagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepurchasermaybetakenfromtheskelp,atapointapproximately90°fromtheweld,andshallnotbeflattenedbetweengagemarks.Thesidesofeachspecimenshallbeparallelbetweengagemarks.Atthemanufactureroption,thetensiontestmaybemadeonfullsectionofpipe.

16.2.3Transverseweldtestspecimensshallbetakenwiththeweldatthecenterofthespecimen.Transversebodytestspecimensshallbetakenoppositetotheweld.Alltransversetestspecimensshallbeapproximately11⁄2in.(38.1mm)wideinthegagelengthandshallrepresentthefullwallthicknessofthepipefromwhichthespecimenwascut.

16.2.4Ifanytestspecimenshowsdefectivemachiningordevelopsflawsnotassociatedwiththequalityofthesteelorthewelding,itmaybediscardedandanotherspecimensubstituted.16.2.5Iftheresultsofthetensiontestsofanylotdonotconformtotherequirementsspecifiedin9.1,retestsoftwoadditionallengthsfromthesamelotshallbemade,eachofwhichshallconformtotherequirementsspecified.
