It was Thanksgiving Day. I got up early and the whole morning I was busy
preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang. I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together on the top step. “Any old papers, lady?” asked one of them.
I was busy. I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals(凉鞋), wet with heavy snow. “Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table. Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor. I served them cocoa and bread to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started cooking.
The silence in the front room struck me. I looked in. The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked in a flat voice, “Lady, are you rich?” “Am I rich? Pity, no!”
I looked at my worn-out slipcovers(椅套). The girl put her cup back in its saucer(茶碟)carefully and said, “Your cups match your saucers.” They left after that, holding their papers against the wind. They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.
Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched. I tasted the potatoes and stirred(搅动)the meat soup. Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a regular job, these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy
marks of little sandals were still wet upon my floor. Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

It seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius are linked.
Dr Adele Juda studied 5, 000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate (比例) of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.
Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it.
Dr Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of
studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric (精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group. Also, the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes. But this is a problem. According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution (进化) has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.
Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.
61. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. There is a strong link between mental problems and creativity.
B. Psychiatric patients make greater contributions than common people. C. The key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes.
D. Among the surveyed people in Germany, more creative people suffer from mental diseases .
62. What is the writer's attitude toward madness? A. All the talented people are mad.
B. Madness is harmful to the whole society. C. A little creative madness is good for us all.
D. Only the people with mental illness have more creativity.
6
63.Based on the research of Dr Ruth Richards of Harvard University, we can conclude that ____.
A. great artists and scientists often suffer from mental problems B. psychiatric patients have more creativity than the average people
C. it is our genes that determine the link between creativity and mental illness D. the patients' close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group
64. According to Dr Adele Juda, which of the following has the lowest rate of mental illness?
A. Painters. B. Musicians. C. Poets. D. Bus drivers. 65. The underlined phrase \"made a breakthrough\" in the 4th paragraph means \"_____\".
A. make a way through using force
B. discover or find something new and important C.(of the sun or moon) appear from behind(clouds) D. suddenly change (from a slower to a faster pace)

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of natural disasters over the past few years, and it is assumed that global warming and climate change could cause even more disasters in the future. Some of the world's leading cities are facing disasters like floods and heat waves. London
London's flood defences are getting older. Since 1982, the Thames Barrier(水闸)has protected the city from the threat of flooding, but it was only designed to last until 2030 and close once every two or three years. About 21 years later the barrier now closes five or six times a year and according to Environment Agency predictions, by 2050 the barrier will be closed on almost every tide if the problem is not addressed.
There are 26 underground stations, 400 schools, 16 hospitals, an airport and 80 billion worth of property in London's flood risk area, so large scale flooding would be disastrous. Paris
Over a six-week period in July and August 2008, more than 11400—mainly elderly people—died in France from dehydration (脱水) and extremely high body
temperature in a deadly heat wave. Heat waves of similar intensity(强度)are expected every seven years by 2050, so what can be done to make sure such a disaster does not happen again?
One solution is to have air conditioners installed in elderly care homes. But this is considered a short term solution, as the increase in demand for electricity also increases carbon emissions.
In Paris the local authorities are encouraging architects to design new types of buildings such as the building “Flower Tower”, which uses a covering of bamboo to act as a natural air conditioner. Shanghai
7
Shanghai is the fastest growing city on Earth. It has a population of 18 million and is only 4 meters above sea level. Sea levels are predicted to rise by 20 cm within the next century.
An estimated 250,000 people move to Shanghai every year in search of work, placing extra demands on energy consumption. China relies heavily on coal fired power stations, but these emissions increase temperatures and, in turn, warmer seas increase the risk of typhoons.
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Big Disasters in the Future B. Big Cities Facing Big Disasters C. The Increase of Natural Disasters D. Solutions to Natural Disasters 67. What problem should be settled now in London? A. How to protect the city's property. B. Where to build its flood defences.
C. How to use the Thames Barrier to protect the city
D. How to improve the function of the old flood defences.
68. Which of the following measures can't solve the heat wave disaster in Paris? A. Forbidding the city to build “Flower Tower”.
B. Having air conditioners installed in elderly care homes. C. Encouraging architects to design new types of buildings.
D. Putting up new types of buildings with a covering of bamboo. 69. The major threats to Shanghai are ________. A. rising sea levels and typhoons
B. increasing population and coal fired power stations C. extremely high temperature and rising sea levels D. extra demands on energy consumption and typhoons 70. The purpose of the passage is ________. A. to tell us how to protect the big cities B. to explain what causes flood and heat waves C. to give advice on how to defend natural disasters
D. to warn us of the increasing natural disasters in big cities
D
A Southampton University team found that people who were vegetarians by 30 had recorded five IQ points higher on average at the age of 10. Researchers said it could explain why people with a higher IQ were healthier as a vegetarian diet was linked to lower heart disease and obesity rates. The study of 8,179 people was reported in the British Medical Journal.
Twenty years after the IQ tests were carried out in 1970, 366 of the participants said they were vegetarians — although more than 100 reported eating either fish or chicken.
Men who were vegetarians had an IQ score of 106, compared with 101 for non-vegetarians; while female vegetarians averaged 104, compared with 99 for
non-vegetarians. There was no difference in the IQ scores, between strict vegetarians and those who said they were vegetarians but reported eating fish or chicken.
8
Researchers said the findings were partly related to better education and higher class, but it remained statistically significant after adjusting for these factors.
Vegetarians were more likely to be female, to be of higher social class and to have higher academic or vocational qualifications than non-vegetarians. However, these differences were not reflected in their annual income, which was similar to that of non-vegetarians.
Lead researcher Catharine Gale said, “The findings that children with greater intelligence are more likely to report being vegetarians as adults, together with the evidence on the potential benefits of a vegetarian diet on heart health, may help to explain why a higher IQ in childhood or adolescence is linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease in adult life.
But Dr Frankie Phillips of the British Dietetic Association said, “It is like the chicken and egg. Do people become vegetarians because they have a very high IQ or is it just that they are clever enough to be more aware of health issues?” 71.What’s the result of the research mentioned in the text?
A. Children with a healthier heart tend to have a higher IQ later in life.
B. Intelligent children are more likely to become vegetarians later in life. C. Intelligent children tend to belong to higher social class later in life.
D. Children with a higher IQ are less likely to have heart disease later in life. 72.It was found in the research that________.
A. most of the participants became vegetarians 20 years after the IQ tests were carried out
B. female vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians
C. vegetarians who ate fish or chicken were of similar intelligence with strict vegetarians
D. vegetarians were more likely to have higher annual income than non-vegetarians 73.Catharine Gale talked about “being vegetarians” in a(n)________way. A. objective B. favorable C. negative D. doubtful 74.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph mean?
A. Intelligence is linked to not just being a vegetarian but to many factors. B. The rate of getting heart disease is linked to your lifestyle.
C. The link between a high IQ and being a vegetarian is still uncertain. D. The link between a healthy heart and diet remains to be proved. 75.What’ s the best title for the text? A. Get more IQ points! B. Be a vegetarian, please!
C. Vegetarian diet cuts heart risk D. A high IQ is linked to being a vegetarian

[1]Everyone has dreams. Usually they obey the rule that if you can dream it, you can achieve it!If you want to obtain a perfect life in the future, there are always some goals.
[2]The first goal common to all of us is health and energy. We all want to be healthy and fit to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness. Today, with the incredible advance in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan(寿命)is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits. Remember that health is not everything, but without health everything is nothing!
[3]The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent
relationships—intimate(密友), personal or social—with the people we like and
respect, and who like and respect us in turn. Fully 85% of your happiness will the quality of your relationships with your friends at each stage, and in each area of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like and respect you, have more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor. [4]The third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and promoted faster. You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, no matter what you are engaged in.
[5]The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have any financial worries. You want to be completely free of them. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without referring to the price listings to determine what you want to eat.

六、书面表达(参考答案)
When it comes to whether we should make friends selectively or extensively, there is no complete agreement among people. Some people take it for granted that we should make friends selectively and carefully. However, others maintain that making friends extensively should be regarded as the better choice.
Those people who hold the first opinion believe that it’s sensible to look for friends who have similar ideal and outlook on life as well as temperament. In addition, they needn’t waste time dealing with the people they don’t like and prevent themselves from being affected by those people. However, still others think differently. In their opinions, the more friends we make, the easier our life will be. Besides, they argue that we can absorb and learn from the advantages of different people.
Weighing up these two arguments, I prefer the former one. For one thing, not all friends are suitable for us and easy to get along with. For another, friends with similar goals will help us sweep off difficulties. Considering these, we may reasonably conclude that making friends selectively can bring us a true friend.
