Many new problems have appeared in our modern life. One of the biggest of every country is pollution. In America, there are laws to keep the air and water pure and clean. These are new laws and it has taken much time to clean a polluted river or lake. Now the fish are healthy again and people can enjoy swimming in clean water.

When food is brought from the grocery store(杂货店) to the home,it is packed in paper, glass, tin, or plastic. Every day a newspaper comes to the home. Americans used to put all these materials in the garbage(垃圾) bag which is packed up by a large truck. The truck takes these materials to a garbage dump (堆)or land fill. The truck dumps the garbage into a large hole and land is pushed over the garbage until the hole is filled. Then, a new hole must be found.

As the years go by, the garbage increases as the pollution grows. Scientists suggested that some garbage should be used again. They suggested four ideas to businessmen who could make money by recycling or using paper, glass, tin, and plastic again.

Now a recycling truck comes to each home once a week to pick up the materials. American families collect their newspapers in a box and clean all glass, tin, and plastic. The truck takes th em to a factory for recycling.

The newspaper is ground up into(研磨成) very small pieces and made into new paper again. The glass is divided into colors of green, brown, and clear mostly. The glass is crushed(捣,碾)and made into new glass. The tin is cleaned and melted so it can be made into new tin cans. The plastic is meIted down so it can be used to make new containers.

Playing is serious business for children. In fact, it’s what they do best! Ask them why they do it, and kids will probably say, “Because it’s fun!” But it’s much more than that. It's also good for them.

Studies show that from birth babies begin learning through play. They use their five senses to get to know their new world. Touching allows them to discover how different things feel. Brightly coloured toys and clothing help develop a baby’s sense of sight(视觉).

When small children choose which toy to play with, they begin developing their abilities in making decisions.

Children love toys that allow them to use their imagination. Sometimes an empty box is more fun than a high-tech toy. That’s because a box can become anything a child imagines it to be. Crayons, paints and Play-doh(彩色塑泥) are also good because they allow children to create. Traditional building blocks teach important pre-math skills like problem-solving.

Last Sunday the elephant keeper at London Jim Robson, was killed by one of the elephants he loved. It was terrible, and it could be a big problem for the future of London Zoo-and maybe for all Britain’s city zoos.

London Zoo said, that it would move its three elephants to a wild animal park outside London. Its director-general(总经理), Michael Dixon, said, “We are sorry that the elephants are leaving; there have been elephants at London Zoo since 1831.”

One British newspaper said that though many small animals were very interesting, most people wanted to see big animals-and most of all elephants.

London Zoo is not only losing its elephants. The tigers will also leave soon and most of the bears have already gone. Outside the elephant house at London Zoo, a woman called Mary said she hoped the zoo can keep big animals. “This is the only way the young people can see animals without travelling to other countries,” she said.

Zoos are not very good places for animals, but they can help to well keep them. Children can also learn a lot about the animals when they visit zoos.

Another visitor, a man called Alan, was very angry. “If we send back to the wild they will die. If you take away big animals, people will stop visiting London Zoo. It can survive at the moment, but it won’t survive in the future.”

Guide dogs help blind people who cannot see well enough to get around by themselves. Although Yorkshire terriers and poodles are good companion dogs, guide dogs are chosen from larger breeds such as German shepherds, golden retrievers, and Labrador retrievers. The puppies are raised by families until they are eighteen months old. During this time, they get lots of love and attention, but they are also taught to obey. Then the dog goes to a special school where for four months they work with a sighted trainer, an individual who can see. The dog forms a close relationship with this person who teaches it how to follow directions such as right, left, straight ahead, and stop. The young dog also learns to watch out for dangerous traffic and wait until it is safe to cross a busy street.

When the dog is two years old, it starts training with the blind person it will live with. The dog and its new owner make many trips downtown where the blind person lives so the dog becomes familiar with the normal atmosphere. During the training, a sighted trainer always remains with them. A blind person who is getting a guide dog for the first time will train for about a month.
