For centuries , tea has been used for far more than quenching thirst. Around the world people drink it to relax, reinvigorate and relieve, and it's something we need now more than ever.
Even in the United States, a long coffee-dominated country, tea drinking is growing in popularity, with the country consuming 0.4 kilograms (14 ounces) of tea leaves per person a year compared with 0. 36 kilograms(12. 7 ounces) in 2007 according to the United Nations, as people switch away from soda, milk and fruit drinks.
Scientists are beginning to look into just how tea might affect mood and cognition. Specifically, they're investigating whether its relaxing and refreshing effects are a direct biological outcome of the compounds in tea or whetherthey come from the context in which the drink is consumed—preparing your tea, choosing your favorite cup and sitting down for a brief break from the world. Or both.
Drinking green tea has been found to improve brain function in healthy people, said Stefan Borgward, chair and director of the department of psychiatry and psychotherapy at the University of Lubeck, Germany.
In a 2014 study, he gave one or two cups of green tea to 12 healthy volunteers and imaged their brains to analyze changes in connectivity inside certain brain regions.
“We noticed an increased connectivity in regions of the brain associated with working memory,” he said via email.
And a 2017 review of more than 100 studies he coauthored found that green tea can impact the brain in
three ways: It can influence psychopathological state such as reducing anxiety; cognition by benefiting memory and attention; and brain function, specifically memory.
That review concluded that \"it would be desirable\" for more Westerners to consume at least 100 milliliters(3.3 fluid ounces) of green tea each day “to protect neurocognitive function.”
However, Borgward, cautioned that the effects aren't large, and the evidence is mainly provided by small-scale studies.
4. How does the author introduce the tendency of drinking in the U.S.? A. By showing examples. B. By explaining reasons. C. By making a comparison. D. By checking existing facts. 5. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Scientists are looking into why tea makes people relaxed and refreshed. B. The context in which the drink is consumed is very important.
C. People's relaxation is the direct biological outcome of the ingredients in tea. D. Preparing tea, choosing a cup and sitting down for a brief rest is amazing. 6. What can we conclude from Stefan's research? A. Tea is a cure for a neurocognitive disease. B. Green tea is particularly beneficial to our memory. C. Drinking tea every day can prevent us from getting ill. D. Westerners drink less than 100 milliliters of green tea. 7. What is the researcher'sattitude towards the finding?
A. Supportive B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Objective.

Is renting clothes greener than buying them? Sustainable (可持续的) fashion expert Elizabeth Cline isn’t sure. Clothing renting is a hot new industry and businessmen are trying to attract shoppers who care about the environment. Last summer alone,Urban Outfitters, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s American EagleandBanana Republicall announced renting services – a sure sign of changing times.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it? And if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline researched this question in a feature article for Elle, and she concluded that it’s not as sustainable as it seems.
Take shipping for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented – receiving and returning. Cline
writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.
Then there’s the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it’s returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most renting services, this usually means dry-cleaning, which is a polluting process. All the renting services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene, a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutants that’s still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with hydrocarbon (碳氢化合物) alternatives, although these aren’t great either. They can produce harmful waste and air pollution if not handled correctly.
Lastly, Cline fears that renting services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it’s so easily accessible. There’s something called “share-washing” that makes people have more wasteful behaviors because a product or service is shared and thus is considered more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this: advertised as a way to share rides and reduce car ownership, and yet it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling and public transportation use.
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them into the bin after wearing them a few times, but we shouldn’t let the availability of these services make us self-satisfied. There’s an even better step – and that’s wearing what we already have.
8. What do we know about Elizabeth Cline from the passage?
A. She is trying to attract shoppers. B. She is an expert and journalist. C. She has created “share-washing”. D. She never rents clothes. 9. Why does renting services increase people’s appetite for fast fashion?
A. Because it is handled correctly. B. Because it is transported easily. C. Because it is fairly eco-friendly. D. Because it is easily accessible. 10. What can we infer from the passage? A. Clothing renting became popular ten years ago.
B. Consumer transportation has the largest carbon footprint. C. Renting clothes deserves further consideration. D. Uber is a good example of sharing rides.
11. Which section of a newspaper does the text probably come from? A. Environment. B. Technology. C. Travel. D. Medicine.

My family and I never talked about school as the ticket to a future. I was in theclassroom, but I wasn't there to learn to write, read or even speak. When it was my turn to read, I wanted to hide. I was 13 years old, but I already hated being who I was.
I had an English teacher, Mr.Creech, who knew I couldn't read. In one of my first lessons the teacher said that anyone who had a reading age below six had to stand up. I felt so embarrassed. But at the same time, it made me realize that I needed to change the situation. I was determined it wouldn't happen again. Later that day, Mr.Creech encouraged me and promised he would try his best to help me learn to read. From then on, I never gave up practicing reading.
Then when I was 41 years old, one day, I planned to fly back toTexasto visit my friends and family. On my way from the airport, I saw Mr.Creech buying himself a drink. I rushed over and reached into my pocket to pay for him. “Do I know you?” he asked. “Yes, sir, you do know me,” I answered excitedly. “My name is Anthony Hamilton. You taught me English.” The look on his face told me that he remembered the boy he'd once encouraged.
“I'm so glad I had a chance to see you,” I said. “And Mr.Creech, I have great news to share.” I told him I had learned to read. But that wasn't all. I had become a published author and an active speaker. “The next time you get another Anthony Hamilton in your classroom, please encourage him to read as well,” I added.
The experts say what once worried me has a name:dyslexia(诵读困难). But I can tell you it was a lack of desire for education.
12. Why did the author want to hide?
A. Because he felt sorry for himself. B. Because he hated being laughed at. C. Because he couldn't read at all. D. Because he didn't have a ticket. 13. Which of the following could best describe Mr.Creech?
A. Considerate and dutiful. B. thoughtful and enthusiastic. C. Emotional and devoted. D. Friendly and wise. 14. Why couldn't the author read before meeting Mr.Creech? A. Because his reading age was not long enough. B. Because his parents didn't teach him how to read. C. Because he was afraid of reading before the class. D. Because he didn't have inner driving force to learn to read. 15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Mr.Creech taught two students called Anthony Hamilton.
B. The author had become a published author and an active speaker. C. Dyslexia was just the reason that made the author unable to read. D. The author was grateful to Mr.Creech.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Amanda was disheartened when she looked across the table at her three-year-old sister. Li sat on a seat, drinking from her sippy cup. Wondering why Li was still afraid of her, Amanda took a cookie off her plate and held it out to Li, “Want a bite?”
As soon as Li saw Amanda reaching over, her eyes widened. She jumped down from her seat and raced to her room. What an annoyance! Amanda complained to Mom that she had thought being a big sister would be fun. Mom took Amanda’s hand reminding her that Li was in a new country with a new family and how scared she might be.
“Honey, she is still getting used to you,” Mom added. “It’s only been two weeks.”
Over a year ago, Amanda’s parents said that they were adopting a daughter from China, and Amanda had danced with excitement. She’d dreamed of taking her sister to the park, reading books to her, and teaching her to ride a bicycle. That hadn’t happened, though. In the weeks since their trip to China, Li had only let their mom and dad near her. Amanda had drawn pictures for her, read to her, and made funny faces, but none had worked. Whenever she got close, Li ran away.
“I just wish I knew how to help her,” Amanda said to herself, thinking of Li’s frightened eyes. As she sat onto the couch, she turned on the TV and began to watch a cartoon about a dog and a cat. After a few seconds,
Amanda realized that the cartoon was in another language. The show looked funny, but she didn’t understand any of it. Sighing deeply, she remembered the days when they were in China. She had got frustrated when people talked in Mandarin, the language spoken in Li’s province.
