蔡邕是汉朝著名的大学者，文史、音乐、天文样样精通，可谓学识渊博，名重一时。但他和人交往从不摆架子，还特别喜爱结交有真才实学的人。一天，蔡邕正在房中休息，家人向蔡邕报告说，门外来了一位自称王粲的客人。蔡邕一听，急忙跳下床来，穿上鞋子就往门外跑。由于太慌忙，把右脚的鞋子穿到了左脚上，把左脚的鞋子穿到了右脚上，而且两只鞋都倒穿着。站在门外的王粲一看闻名天下的蔡先生是这个模样，便抿着嘴笑起来。家人看到王粲，不禁惊呆了：没想到这个王粲只是一个长得又瘦又小的少年！像蔡邕这样德高望重的学者，却对一个孩子这样尊重，难道不怕有失身份吗？蔡邕看出了家人的疑惑，就说：“这位王粲，才华出众，我蔡邕都不如他呀！我家的全部书籍和文章都应该赠送给他。”王粲的确不是一般的人物，他出身名门，曾祖父王龚、祖父王畅都曾位列三公；父亲王谦为大将军何进的长史；他自己是当时名满天下的“建安七子”之一，年少时就相当有才名，曾写下了《登楼赋》和《七哀诗》这样千古传诵的名篇。王粲记忆超群，过目不忘。有一次，他与朋友一起走路，见路旁有座石碑，两个人站在那里把碑文看了一遍。朋友开玩笑问他：“你能把碑文背下来吗？”王粲竟然转过身去，一字不差地背了下来。还有一次，王粲看别人下棋，忽然棋盘上的棋子不小心被人碰乱了，无法再下。正当下棋的人相互埋怨时，王粲不声不响上前去将棋子摆好，结果与散乱之前一模一样，围观的人都佩服得不得了。看来，王粲这个人确实才华出众，智力超群，值得人景仰。难怪连蔡邕这么有名的学者都那样敬重他。在古代，人与人之间的身份、地位、尊卑是分得非常清楚的。蔡邕能够放下大学者的身份，唯才是重，对年轻的王粲倒履相迎，不能不令人敬佩。
