PART THREE READING COMPREHENSION (30 marks)
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.
( A )
America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!
56. The writer of this passage must be ______.
A. an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student 57. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families. B. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives. C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
D. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.

58. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will probably be ______.
A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home
C. treated hospitably at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant
59. The underlined words ―generous with our time‖ in Paragraph 3 probably mean
______.
A. strict with time B. serious with time C. careful with time D. willing to spend time 60. A suitable title for this passage would probably be ―______‖.
A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans
C. Americans’ hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese’s views of friendships

You Mi, a lovely and confident 17-year-old student, is the first Chinese high school student to appear on the cover of the popular young adults’ fashion magazine Seventeen. “You is IN,” said Wang Lihua, Editor-in-Chief of Seventeen. “She is active and mature(成熟的) because of her knowledge on everything from academic studies, to books on art, to movies. We found she’s the very style we’re looking for to represent young people’s attitudes.‖
You also impressed Wang with her fluent English when they first met last year. As the hostess of an English broadcasting programme at the High School Affiliated to Renmin University, You is always praised for speaking English almost like a native speaker. ―I’ve built up my English by watching thousands of English DVDs since I was 10,‖ she explained.
But for You, watching isn’t enough. Last year, while in Senior 1, she met a talented boy who showed self-made DV movies at the English Corner in her school.
“I thought it was so cool and I knew that I should start making my own films,” she said. So she wrote a campus(校园) story, persuaded schoolmates to star in it and then began shooting a 30-minute DV movie, all in English. “I played one of the leading roles, actually I was everything in my film. I worked on it every single day during the SARS holidays,” she recalled. The movie finally became a big hit on campus, earning You a strong reputation(名气) as a DV movie director.
But this is not the only field she wants to master. Despite being a science student, You likes art, literature and fashion design very much.
“There are people who can be artists, there are people who edit books, and there are people who become film producers. But I just hope to mix all the things up!” she said. “There is an old saying I believe: Chance favours only the prepared mind.” 61. Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble—and was he? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP (超感觉知觉).
ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.
Here's an example. A woman was ironing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, \"My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!\" Just then, a telegram came. The woman's father died of a heart attack. He died sitting in a chair.
There are thousands of stories like this one on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what's behind these strange mental messages. Here's another example—one of hundreds of dreams that have come true.
A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse and carriage came by. The driver said, \"There's room for one more.\" The man felt the driver seemed dead, so he ran away. The next day, when the man was getting on a crowded bus, the bus driver said, \"There's room for one more.\"
Then the man saw that the driver's face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn't get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crashed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed!
Some people say stories like these are coincidences. Others, including some scientists, say that ESP is real. From studies of ESP, we may someday learn more about the human mind.
66. According to the passage, the author believes that the sixth sense is ________. A. in existence B. imaginative C. not real D. impossible 67. ESP lets people know _________.
A. about events before they happen B. about events after they happen C. about events that are happening some distance away D. A and C 68. By studying ESP, scientists may get to ________.

C. things that must happen D. things that happen by accident 70. This article is mainly about ________.
A. the human dream B. the sixth sense C. the human mind D. a crowded bus PART FOUR WRITING (45 marks) SECTION A (10 marks)
Directions : Read the following passage.Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information
from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
The art of growing dwarf (short) trees, or ―bonsai‖ as their Japanese planters call them, is increasing in popularity in the United States. Growing bonsai can make a fascinating hobby for anyone who enjoys plants and creating beautiful effects with them. However, how can we meet the goal of making such a kind of art? This maybe is the problem for many of us.
There are, in fact, four important guidelines to follow in growing bonsai. First, one must be careful in choosing the type of tree. Not all species of trees can be made into bonsai, since the growing conditions are unusual.
Second, one must be careful in choosing the size of the container the bonsai will be in. This is necessary because the major growth of bonsai is kept confined to the tree’s trunk and leaves, not its root system.
Another thing the bonsai-grower must do is to trim (修整) the roots and branches of the tree periodically(定期地).Unless this is done, the plants will look unnatural. The Japanese ideal for bonsai is not to have the proper proportions and will have trees which are just like normal trees in everything, but in small size.
The last thing one must do is to be careful to keep the miniature(small)tree well-watered, or it will die.
As one can see from above, the art of bonsai-growing is one which requires a certain amount of time and effort. The satisfactions that growing bonsai brings can be great, however. Imagine having such a tree in your living room and passing it down through several generations of your family. That is exactly what bonsai-growing is all about: establishing a tradition of beauty which lasts for years and years and is a symbol of the beauties of the natural world.

There is one thing about my mother that drives me crazy. She calls me 10:30 p. m. every night to make sure I’ve arrived home safely. If I accidentally miss her call, she will keep calling all my friends and roommates until she ―tracks me down‖.
As a 20-something lady in Beijing, I feel the 10:30 p.m. curfew(宵禁) embarrassing –especially when I have to ask my friends to be quiet so that I can pick up my mother’s phone call, telling her a white lie that I’m already at home.
However, compared with other parents I ran into recently at a matchmaking meeting, my mother is not that overprotective.
The matchmaking event is held twice a week in a park and specifically designed for single white-collar workers in Beijing. The interesting part is that all of the attendees are single people’s parents, desperate to look for a life partner for their children.
One mother told me that her 33-year-old son is busy working on his career and has zero time to find a suitable girl for himself. So she goes to the matchmaking every week, trying to find her son a perfect bride.
She guaranteed that her future daughter-in-law doesn’t need to worry about anything. ―I’ve prepared an apartment and a car for them. I’m now choosing the kindergartens. If the kindergarten’s location is far from the apartment I’ve bought, I’ll buy them another one.‖ she said proudly.
Looking at hundreds of middle-aged parents standing in the cold outdoors of a freezing winter trying to build their children a perfect future, I suddenly understand my mother more.
In Western countries, once people reach 18 years old, most of them need to earn money by themselves or at least borrow money from their parents to go to college. In China though, If children have the desire to learn, their parents will do whatever they can to help, even financially support a PhD degree or in some cases sell their blood to pay tuition fees.
I believe Chinese parents are the most dedicated and devoted parents in the world. From the moment their children are born, Chinese parents never stop thinking about them for a second-they are used to taking care of their children even when they are old enough to take care of themselves.
It’s now time for Chinese parents to take a break and realize that their children are grown-ups.
