A

(2018届高三·金华十校调研)For many Chinese young people, a routine Spring Festival Eve means a big meal with the whole family, an occasional glimpse of the Spring Festival Gala on TV, and most importantly, talking to friends on your cellphone. But Su Hanting, a 16yearold boy, spent last year's Spring Festival Eve at a desk, translating a classic work of English literature.

Su started translating The Story of King Arthur and His

Knights (1903), a 120, 000word by an American author, Howard Pyle,

during his winter vacation. He didn't take a break during the biggest festival of the year. “Every second counts,” Su said.

Like many teenagers of his age, Su enjoys reading both Chinese English classics. But the idea of translating only occurred to

and him

by chance — he was just helping his classmates to figure out some of the medieval (中世纪的) place names in this book. But once he started, he couldn't stop. For the ancient place names and the titles of the Knights, he searched online, looked for maps in the library and read historical documents related to King Arthur. Meanwhile, he also read the original novel over and over again to make sure of the thoughts and emotions as well as possible.

His preparation paid_off. It only took him three months, mostly during his winter vacation, to translate the book. And that includes the time he lost after finishing 80,000 words that were gone because of a computer bug. The translated version came out on November 15th and has won high praise from experts.

1.What did Su do on the Spring Festival Eve? A.Watched TV.

B.Played with his cellphone. C.Talked to his friends. D.Continued his translation.

根据第一段最后一句“But Su Hanting, a 16yearold boy ...

2.What did Su's classmates ask him to do? A.To buy a lot of original novels. B.To find out some place names of a book. C.To surf the Internet for information. D.To look for some maps in the library.

根据第三段第二句“But the idea of translating only occurred ... names in this book.”

3.The underlined words “paid off” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.

A.worked C.failed

B.cost D.finished

根据最后一段第二句“It only took him three months, mostly during his winter vacation, to translate the book.”

“I have nothing to wear!” You might have said to yourself, feeling slightly distressed, wardrobe door wide open, hours before going to a party or important event. Casual or formal? Is this too fancy? Should I be more neatly dressed?

How strictly should we follow fashion rules? “Never mix patterns” is one of them. “It's unnecessary,” says Martine Alexander, adviser to British TV actresses. “Matching everything makes you look like you've tried too hard. Style should look effortless.”

Well, just be careful not to make people's eyes go funny when they look at you, I say.

Men have the issue of white socks. “Unless you're exercising there is absolutely no appropriate moment to wear white socks,” says Alex Bilmes, editor of the men's magazine Esquire. And he adds,“These types of rules exist to make sure fashion innocents don't make such a bad mistake.”

We all know that white socks are usually bulky and may look cheap. But there's a long British tradition of men wearing socks with sandals (凉鞋). So ... Maybe critics should just let us wear what we are comfortable with.

When you look a particular way, you are sending a message about yourself. It's not

a good idea to go to a job interview wearing shorts or going to the market in your pajamas. But, whatever you wear, do it with confidence.

“I don't do fashion. I am fashion,” said Coco Chanel. And designer Gianni Versace said it all, “Don't be into trends. Don't make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, and what you want to express, by the way you dress and the way you live.”

4.The author writes the first paragraph to ________. A.introduce the topic of the text B.teach the rules of fashion

C.illustrate the problem of choosing what to wear D.stress the importance of proper dressing

5.What does the author advise doing? A.Not wearing white socks with sandals. B.Trying not to look funny to others. C.Minding the dress code for parties. D.Going shopping in shorts.

根据第三段“Well, just be careful not to make people's eyes go funny when they look at you, I say.”

6.Who may the author disagree with concerning his/her idea of fashion? A.Martine Alexander. C.Coco Chanel.

B.Alex Bilmes. D.Gianni Versace.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted

before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Twothirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression and fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission (服从).

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.

What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.

The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets — to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

7.Which below is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1?

A.Smoothly. C.Quickly.

B.Briefly. D.Early.

8.When are some cats and dogs likely to fight with each other? A.They are introduced at an early age. B.They are cold to each other.

.....

.....

C.They misunderstood each other's signals. D.They stared at each other.

根据第二段的倒数第二句“One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite.”

9.It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs ________. A.are less different than we thought B.have common interests

C.are less intelligent than we expected D.have a common body language

根据第四段的第二句“They can learn how to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously suspected.”

10.What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs? A.To live in peace with animals. B.To live in harmony. C.To know more about animals. D.To learn body signals.

根据最后一段“The significance of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets ... surely people have a good chance.”
