The best apps for food waste Too Good To Go

This fast-expanding platform was launched in 2016, and handled food waste by making surplus (剩余的), unsold food from supermarkets, cafes and restaurants available to consumers at heavily discounted prices. There is an element of surprise as the food comes in a lucky “magic bag”, each costing a third of the sale price. Olio

Founded in 2015, Olio claims to be the world’s biggest food-sharing network. It connects neighbors with each other so that surplus food is given, not thrown away. Olio users just take a picture of their items and add them to the listings. Neighbors receive customized messages and can request anything they fancy, with pick-up arranged through private messaging. Kitche

Kitche handled food waste in the home by helping users to keep track of what they have bought and plan meals accordingly. Users scan receipts or upload online receipts stored on their phones. The app will then tap into its recipe bank to plan meals based on the food you have, reminding you of items nearing use-by dates. NoWaste

NoWaste allows users to keep track of the food in their fridge and freezer, also by scanning shopping receipts. You can set the use-by dates for all your food, receive messages when they are close to the last date, and record shopping lists and meal plans. 21.Which app enables users to buy food at really low prices A.Olio. B.Kitche. C.NoWaste. D.Too Good To Go. 22.What can users do through Olio

A.Buy unsold food from supermarkets. B.Share surplus food with neighbors.

C.Find a “magic bag” of food from cafes. D.Plan meals using available food items.

23.What do Kitche and NoWaste have in common A.Both can offer users online receipts after their shopping. B.Both can advise users what to buy based on a recipe bank. C.Both can remind users of foods’ use-by dates. D.Both can tell users what food they waste the most. B

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”---Albert Einstein

If you have a kid with special needs in the school system, you’re likely to have come across that saying hanging on a classroom wall. My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems, that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.

By now you have probably heard about Chris Ulmer, the 26-year old teacher in Jacksonville, Florida, who starts his special education class by calling up each student to give them much admiration and a high-five. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. Ulmer recently

shared a video of his teaching experience. “I have seen their confidence increase rapidly.” he said. All I could think was: how lucky these students are to have such good teachers.

Syona’s teacher has an attitude that can best be summarized in one word: wonderful. Her teacher doesn’t focus on what can’t be done---she focuses on what can be done. Over the past several months, my husband Dilip and I have seen Syona’s confidence increase greatly. She uses words she wouldn’t have thought of using before. She recently told me about her classmates trip to Ecuador and was very proud when I understood her on the first try. I actually wonder what the influence would be if we did something similar to what Ulmer does with his students in our home. We’ve recently started our day by reminding each other of the good qualities we all have. If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.

24.What does the author think of Albert Einstein’s saying A.Funny. B.True. C.Strange. D.Confusing. 25.What can we learn about Syona’s teacher

A.She is Syona’s favorite teacher. B.She puts Einstein’s quote on the wall

C.She uses videos to teach her students. D.She helps increase her

students’ confidence.

26.What change has taken place in the author’s family A.They’ve invited Ulmer’s students to their home. B.They visit Ulmer’s classroom regularly. C.They give each other praise every day. D.They feel thankful to people in their lives.

27.What is the author’s attitude towards Chris Ulmar’s way of teaching

A.Supportive B.Opposed C.Indifferent D.Negative C

Historical accounts often described the now-extinct California grizzly bears as huge beasts ready to attack humans and livestock at any time. But according to a new paper, scientists say the truth might have been less dramatic: The bears ate a mostly vegetarian diet and were smaller than previously described. California grizzly bears once roamed in the Golden State. But European settlers often hunted, poisoned and trapped the creatures. Over time, because of these human activities, the California grizzly population declined. The last reliable sighting of a California grizzly bear occurred 100 years ago in 1924, and the animals disappeared completely sometime after that.

Researchers wanted to get a better understanding of the factors

that accelerated the bears’ extinction. They also hoped to gain more insight into the creatures’ behavior, size and diet. To do so, they turned to documents and California grizzly specimens in natural history collections. They measured the animals’ skulls and teeth and analyzed their bones and pelts. The researchers found that California grizzly bears were much smaller than the 2,000 pounds often reported at the time. Historical accounts might not necessarily have been wrong, but they might have only included the largest bears. In addition, analyses of the animals’ bones and skins suggest the bears were primarily eating plants, which stands in contrast to their fear some hyper carnivorous (超级食肉的) reputation. “The bears likely increased meat consumption due to landscape changes coupled with the arrival of livestock,” says study co-author Alexis Mychajliw. However, researchers found the animals still ate a majority vegetarian diet and killed far less livestock than historical accounts suggested.

By digging beyond the bears’ reputation, the researchers gained a more accurate understanding of the California grizzly’s biology and natural history. And since scientists and land managers often rely on historical accounts when reintroducing animals to their former habitats, the study serves as a reminder that those old newspapers and journals do not tell the whole story.

28.What does the underlined word “roamed” in paragraph 1 mean A.Disappeared. B.Declined. C.Fought. D.Wandered.

29.What did the researchers discover about California grizzly bears A.They mainly fed on livestock. B.Their diet consisted mostly of plants. C.They ate a balanced diet of plants and meat. D.The absence of livestock changed their dietary habit.

30.What can we learn about historical accounts of animals from the last paragraph

A.They are unique. B.They are one-sided. C.They are accurate. D.They are comprehensive. 31.What is the text mainly about

A.The natural habitats of California grizzly bears. B.The extinction process of California grizzly bears. C.The reveal of the truth of California grizzly bears. D.The significance of the arrival of California grizzly bears. D

There has been a recent wave in Hollywood where studios take popular animated (动画的) films and “improve” upon them by changing them into live-action remakes. The thought that live-action movies are better because they follow the laws of the natural world degrades the style of animation.

The beauty of animation is that its use of caricatures (漫画) and exaggerations (夸张) reflects an amazing amount of creative depth in characters stories that reality cannot. Looking at the bigger picture, it becomes clear that the true purpose of Disney’s ever growing list of live-action remakes is not to comment on the value of animation, although it indirectly does, but a quick way to take advantage of nostalgic (怀旧的) fans.

For evidence, look no further than Disney’s 2019 The Lion King live-action remake, a retelling of the 1994 animated classic. It broke several box office records, raking in a whopping $543.6 million globally in box office sales alone. However, in comparison to the original, the audience satisfaction with the remake decreased greatly on Rotten Tomatoes. This is similar to the the remakes of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Dumbo, Aladdin, and the countless other live-action remakes Disney has produced within the last 5 years. This means that Disney no longer needs to come up with new and original content because they can make a big profit just by taking beloved stories and remaking them.

In fact, Disney looks at itself as a business, and therefore considers making a profit as one of their main aims.

The problem with this mentality (心态) is that, while Disney makes a huge profit, audiences, artists, and art suffer. They may no longer

create new stories or art styles, but rather serve as money-making machines that require directors to produce the same stories with a fresh coat of paint every 10 years or so. If this cycle continues, artists will be held back from creating new lovable characters and stories full of creativity. The feeling of nostalgia when we see old Disney films could possibly never happen-to newer generations if this cycle does not stop.

32.What does the author think of live-action remakes A.They slow down Hollywood development. B.They’ve failed to become a popular art form. C.They are poor at showing the beauty of nature. D.They destroy the artistic expression of animation. 33.What makes animation attractive

A.It bases its stories on reality. B.It uses many special effects. C.It explores characters fully. D.It brings back fans’ memories. 34.Why does the author mention the live-action remakes in paragraph 3

A.To tell us Disney has given up its originality.

B.To show Disney has focused more on making money. C.To prove too many remakes have been produced. D.To show audiences have high expectations of remakes. 35.What is wrong with Disney’s choice

A.It reduces Disney’s incomes. B.It demands more from directors. C.It hurts new-generation audiences. D.It causes artists to be less creative.

A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day. How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff knew exactly what to do.

The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 am. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going smoothly

until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it cooked nicely.

Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they

could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well. 注意:

But if you judge a fish, by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.(每个人都是天才。但是,如果你以爬树的能力来判断一条鱼,那么它一辈子都会认为自己很笨)”和第二段“My five-year-old daughter Syona has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and it means, combined with her communication and sight problems,

that normal standard isn’t always an accurate measure of her abilities.(我5岁的女儿Syona患有脑瘫,这意味着,再加上她的沟通和视力问题,正常的标准并不总是对她能力的准确衡量)”和最后一段的“If we are reminded of our strengths on a regular basis, we will become increasingly confident about progress and success.(如果我们经常被提醒我们的优势,我们将对进步和成功越来越有信心)”可知,作者认为爱因斯坦说的这句话是非常正确的。故选B。

25.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“I couldn’t help but be reminded of Syona’s teacher and how she supports each kid in a very similar way. 32.推理判断题。根据第一段“The thought that live-action movies are better because they follow the laws of the natural world degrades the style of animation. (认为真人电影更好,因为它们遵循了自然世界的规律,这种想法贬低了动画的风格)”和第二段“The beauty of animation is that its use of caricatures (漫画) and exaggerations (夸张) reflects an amazing amount of creative depth in characters stories that reality cannot. One month ago ,to give my brother a surprise during the Spring Festival, I ordered it in advance ; however, the product arrived long after the Spring Festival had passed, causing great inconvenience . Furthermore, the product I received is different from what was advertised. It lacks the promised features and functions, which makes it a poor choice as a gift. Therefore, I would like a full refund and I hope that future orders can be delivered promptly to avoid similar inconvenience.

It is my sincere hope that you’ll take my complaints seriously. Looking forward to your early reply. Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Spotting the messy situation, their father seemingly understood everything. Instead of blaming them for their carelessness, their father put on a bright smile and patted on their heads. “Do you want to give your mother a surprise Let me help you fix it.” Father said with a twinkle in his eyes.Hearing the words, the twins nodded their heads firmly, their cheeks glowing with excitement. Under the father’s instruction, they accomplished their task perfectly this time. Looking at the inviting breakfast, they exchanged a quick glance with each other.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. The instant she noticed the breakfast , surprise and then happiness took hold of her ,making her unable to utter a single word. “Happy Mother’s Day!” the twins exclaimed with one voice, rushing into their mother’s warm arms .Tightly embracing them , she stroked the twins’ hair with affection, whispering “Thanks, sweetie.”, her eyes misty. And just at that moment, their father ,who stood behind them in silence ,wearing a dazzling smile ,captured this image and recorded the memorable scene with the help of his camera .Love

and laughter lingered around the whole room.
