Escaping a fire is a serious matter . Knowing what to do before a fire breaks out can save a life . For example , people should know the safety measures to take before opening a hall door during a fire . Also , make sure everyone knows how to unlock doors that may be in the escape path . At times , a key is needed to unlock a door from the inside . So, keep the key in the lock . Or, you can put the key on a key ring and put it where it can be found easily .

If you live in a flat , know the ways you can use to get out . Show everyone in the family these paths . Remind everyone of the importance of using stairways or fire escapes , not lifts .

From most homes and lower floors of a block of flats , escape through windows is possible . Learn the best way of leaving by a window with the least chance of serous injury .

In a home fire , windows are often the only means of escape . The second floor windowsill is usually not more than 13 feet from the ground . An average person , hanging by the fingertips , will have a drop of about six feet to the ground . Of course , it is safer to jump a short way than to stay in a burning building . Roll away from the building when you land .

Are you preparing for a big test? If so, you may want to go play some basketball in between hitting the books. Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development. Judy Cameron, a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development. According to her research, it seems that exercise can make blood vessels(管), including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed. Dr. Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. As she says, “While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”

The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies. Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results. Margaret Barnes, a pediatrician(儿科医生), believes in

- 7 -

the importance of exercise. She thinks that many learning disabilities that children have in elementary school or high school can be traced back to a lack of movement as babies. “Babies need movement that stimulates their five senses. They need to establish a connection between motion and memory. In this way, as they get older, children will begin to associate physical activity with higher learning,” says Margaret.

Older people can beef up their brains as well. Come 11 University studied a group of seniors ranging in age from seventy to seventy-nine. Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for infants(婴儿), exercise for older people should involve some complexity. Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai-chi, helps to open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.

For most, people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as two to three hours of exercise a week. 53.What is the main idea of this reading? A.How to exercise B.How exercise helps the brain C.How to get good scores on a test D.How the brain can change

.According to the reading, what is the connection between exercise and brain development? A.Exercise makes us stupid. B.The brain needs special mental exercise. C.The more exercise, the bigger the brain. D.Physical exercise helps us think better.

55.The minimum amount of exercise required to gain any benefit is . A.three hours per week B.40 hours per week C.three hours per day D.40 hours per month 56.Why is yoga recommended for seniors? A.It is easy on joints. B.It can be done in groups. C.It does not increase the heart rate. D.It includes learning new motions.

Cancer is among the top killer diseases in our society today and scientists have found out that stress helps to bring it on. It is worthwhile to consider, therefore, what are the causes of stress in our life, and whether we can do anything about them.

Are we under-employed, or overburdened with too many responsibilities? Do we have a right balance of work and leisure in our lives? Are our relationships with family, friends or fellow workers in a good state?

All these things can be a cause of stress, and it is best to face them honestly, and to bring our frustration(沮丧) into the open. People who have a row and then forget it are

- 8 -

doing their health more good than those who bottle up their feelings.

If our self-examination has brought any causes of stress to light, let us consider what we can do about them. It is possible to change jobs. We can make more leisure and fill in more fun, if we will accept a different living standard. We can improve our personal relationships by a different attitude. It is we who allow other people to make ourselves unhappy. Often the little things that disturb us are not worth an hour’s anger. The teaching in the Bible “Let not the sun go down upon your wrath (愤怒)” is good advice from the health point of view as well as the religious.

A.Stress is the direct cause of cancer.

B.The cause of stress is worthy of serious study. C.Cancer is the number one killer in our society today.

D.People who can’t accept a different living standard are less likely to suffer from stress.

means______

A.a noisy quarrel C.a good relationship A.Changing our jobs.

B.Changing our attitude about little things that make us unpleased. C.Speaking out about our frustrations. D.Reading the Bible

A.Don’t let your anger last long.

B.Don’t get angry even though the sun is going down.

One possible version: Ladies and gentlemen ,

We all know a popular saying , “Time is money.” But in my opinion , time is even more precious than money. Why ? Because when money is gone , we can earn it back; however , when time is gone ,it will never return .

It is clear that the time we can use is limited . Therefore , we should make full use of our time to do useful things . As students , we must not relax our efforts in our studies , so we can serve our country better in the future .

But some people do not know the importance of time . They spend their precious time smoking , drinking and chatting . They do not realize that wasting time is equal to wasting a part of their valuable life .

In short , we should form the good habit of making full use of time . Don’t put off what can be done today until tomorrow .

Thank you .
