May 29, 1951 [May 31, 1950], No. 13606/50.Classes 120(i) 120(ii) and 120 (iii) Textile fibres or continuous filaments are crimped by -means of the apparatus described and claimed in Specification 696,762 augmented bymeans for heating the fibrous material so that it is hot when in the confined passage 30.The material may be of a thermoplastic nature, e.g. filaments or staple fibres of celluloseacetate or other organic derivative of cellulose such as cellulose propionate, cellulosebutyrate, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose acetate stearate and ethyl cellulose, or ofsynthetic linear polymers such as polyamides, or of vinyl compounds such as copolymersof vinyl acetate with vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride or acrylonitrile, or non-thermoplastic fibres such as cotton or flax fibres, or continuous filaments or staple fibresof regenerated cellulose, and immediately before crimping may receive an application ofa liquid such as water or an aqueous dressing or lubricant. The material may be heatedwhile in the passage 30 the walls of which can be heated by electrical elements 51, 52,carried. within a casing filled with heat insulation 56, or by a jacket for the reception of afluid-heating medium e.g. steam, hot water. Alternatively or in addition the material may

be :heated immediately before reaching nip rollers 13, 14, by passing it around or incontact with a heated roller or in sliding contact with a curved heated surface, or it maybe passed through a tube that is heated e.g. electrically or by a heating jacket, orthrough which steam may be passed and allowed to impinge on the rollers 13, 14, inwhich case the material may be moistened by the vapour condensing thereon, Figs. 5-8(not shown).
