Some of the best evidence linking rising carbon dioxide levels to a warmer world comes from the coldest places on earth. Samples of ancient air extracted (taken) from deep inside the Antarctic(南极)and Greenland ice caps make it clear that CO2 is scarce in the atmosphere during ice ages and relatively plentiful during warmer interglacial periods(冰川期)—like the one we’re in now.
The relationship between CO2 and climate is clear going back about 800,000 years. Before that, however, it gets murkier. That’s largely because ice and air that old haven’t yet been found. So scientists rely instead on indirect measurements—and these have led to a climate mystery: some episodes of past warming, including a planetary heat wave about 15 million years ago and another about 3.5million years ago, seem to have happened without a rise in CO2. No one quite understands why. Maybe other greenhouse gases were the cause—methane, for example. Or maybe it had to do with changes in ocean circulation.
But according to a new study just published in Science, there may not be any mystery after all. By looking at the chemistry of fossilized foraminifera (有孔虫类)— tiny sea creatures no bigger than a grain of sand — a team led by Aradhna Tripati, of University of the California, Los Angeles, has detected a significant increase in CO2 level during both warming episodes.
If they’re right, it could be pretty bad news, even for those who already worry about rising CO2. It’s generally agreed that during the earlier warm period, known as the Miocene Climatic Optimum, which occurred 15 million years ago, the global temperature was high enough to make sea levels between 80 ft. and 130 ft. higher than they are today.
Of course, an increase in CO2 (or any other heat-trapping greenhouse gas) can’t lead to that kind of sea-level rise unless the CO2 level stays high for a while. The latest predictions suggest a rise of 6 ft. at most by 2100, even if CO2 continues to increase at the current rate. But the new study implies that failing to reduce emissions could eventually lead to a disaster worse than most climate Cassandras have dreamed of.
These scientists aren’t the first to look at the chemistry of foraminifera; the fossils are plentiful in ancient ocean sediments(沉积), so they’re a particularly good tracer(追踪器) of the past. But they used a new technique to measure CO2: looking at how much of the element boron (硼) was present in the foraminifera’s shells. When there’s lots of CO2 in the air, there’s also more in
the top layers of seawater, where the relevant species of foraminifera live. That makes the water more acidic, which in turn makes the tiny animals absorb less boron into their shells as they grow.
65. What conclusion can be drawn from the samples of ancient air deep inside the Antarctic?
A. Antarctic is as cold as Greenland.
B. There is the most CO2 in Antarctic atmosphere.
C. The warmer the climate is, the more CO2 is in the atmosphere.
D. The colder the world is, the higher the CO2 level is.
66. The word “murkier” (Line 2, Para. 2) is the closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. more obvious B. less certain C. easier D. less uncertain
67.What result did the scientists get by adopting indirect measurements to study the relationship between CO2 and climate? A. CO2 contributed to the warmer climate most.
B. There were other greenhouse gases causing the warmer weather.
C. It seems that some past warming wasn’t related to the rising of CO2.
D. It was the changes in ocean circulation that caused the warmer climate.
68. What did the study published in Science find?
A. Today’s CO2 levels were higher than those of 15 million years ago.
B. The rising of CO2 was caused by the chemistry in foraminifera.
C. The fossilized foraminifera was the main cause of global warming.
D. There was a rise in CO2 during two episodes.
69. In what situation will today’s sea levels be as high as those of 15 million years ago according
to the passage?
A. The CO2 levels remain high for a period. B. The global temperature becomes very high. C. There is enough heat-trapping greenhouse gas.
D. There are more emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere.
C.
My first life began on a cold day in November 1934. My father died when I was 15, and we had a hard struggle to make a living. As the children grew up, they married, leaving only one sister and myself to support and care for Mother, who became paralyzed(瘫痪的) in her last years and died while still in her 60s. My sister married
soon after, and I followed her example within the year. This was when I began to enjoy my first life. I was very happy, in excellent health, and quite a good athlete. My wife and I became the parents of two lovely girls. I had a good job in San Jose and a beautiful home up the peninsula (半岛) in San Carlos. Life was a pleasant dream. Then the dream ended. I became afflicted (痛苦的) with a slowly progressive disease of the motor nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and then my other side. Thus began my second life …
In spite of my disease I still drove to and from work each day, with the aid of special equipment installed in my car. And I managed to keep my health and optimism, to a degree, based on 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. I felt that if the day arrived when I was unable to lift one foot up one step and then drag the other painfully after it — repeating the process 14 times until exhausted, I would be through — I could then admit defeat and lie down and die. Time passed. The girls went to college and were happily married, and my wife and I were alone in our beautiful home with the 14 steps.
You might think that here walked a man of courage and strength. Not so. Here lived a bitterly desperate disabled man. As I became older, I became more frustrated.
Then on a dark night in August, 1971, I began my third life. It was raining when I went home that night; gusty winds and slashing rain beat down on the car as I drove slowly down one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly the steering wheel jerked in my hands and the car turned violently to the right. In the same instant I heard the bang of a blowout (车胎爆裂). It was impossible for me to change that tire! A thought that a passing motorist might stop disappeared at once. Why would anyone? I knew I wouldn’t. Thankfully, lighted windows welcomed me to house and I pulled into the driveway and honked the horn.
The door opened and a little girl stood there, peering at me. I rolled down the window and called out that I had a flat tire and needed someone to change it for me because I was disabled and couldn’t do it myself. She went into the house and a moment later came out with raincoat and hat, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting. I sat there comfortable and dry, and felt a bit sorry for the man and the little girl working so hard in the storm. Well, I would pay them for it. The rain seemed to be little now, and I rolled down the window all the way to watch. It seemed to me that they were awfully slow and I was beginning to become impatient. I heard the little girl’s voice come clearly to me. “Here’s the jack-handle, Grandpa.” There followed a long interval of noises, but finally it was done and then they were standing at my car window.
He was an old man and the little girl was about eight or ten, I judged, with a merry face and a wide smile as she looked up at me. He said, “This is a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you?” He shook his head. “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were a cripple. Glad to be of help. I know you’d do the same for me. There’s no charge, friend.” I held out a five-dollar bill. “No! I like to pay my way.” He made no effort to take it and the little girl stepped closer to the window and said quietly, “Grandpa can’t see it.”
In the next few frozen seconds the shame and horror of that moment hurt me. A blind man and a child! Working with cold, wet fingers for tools in the dark — a darkness that for him would probably never end until death. I don’t remember how long I sat there after they said good night and left me, but it was long enough for me to search deep within myself and find some disturbing traits. I realized that I was filled to overflowing with self-pity, selfishness, indifference to the needs of others and thoughtlessness.
Helping others is a way of life, one that I am trying to follow. It isn’t always easy, but the value is there. I am trying now not only to climb 14 steps each day, but in my small way to help others.

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第76-80题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E、F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有多余选项。
A. Manufacturing industry in information economy B. News in the age of information C. Argument about individual accounts and their reliability D. Be your own investigative journalist E. Don’t believe everything you read in the newspapers F. Information is presented in an entertaining way 76. With the arrival of the age of “information economy”, intellectual work is becoming a more important source of wealth than manufacturing. Organizations in all walks of life are doing more to spread their information. So people of the Public Relations are hired to speak for them. A lot of our news is actually collected from press releases and reports of events intentionally staged for journalists. In the information age, journalists spend their time, not investigating, but passing on the words of a spokesperson. 77. There is a joke in the novel Scoop about the newspaper’s owner, Lord Copper. The editors can never disagree with him. When he’s right about something they answer “definitely”, and when he’s wrong they say “to some extent, Lord Copper.” It seems reasonable to suppose that, in the real world, the opinions of such powerful people still influence the journalists and editors who work for them. 78. In countries where the news is not officially controlled, it is likely to be provided by commercial organizations who depend on advertising. The news has to attract viewers and maintain its audience ratings. I suspect that some stories get air-time just because there happen to be exciting pictures to show. In Britain, we have the tabloid newspapers (小报) which millions of people read simply for entertainment. There is progressively less room for historical background, or statistics, which are harder to present as a sensational story. 79.
There is an argument that with spreading access to the internet and cheap technology for recording sound and images we will all be able to find exactly the information we want. People around the world will be able to publish their own eye-witness accounts and compete with the widely-accepted news-gatherers on equal terms. But what it will mean also is that we’ll be subjected to a still greater amount of nonsense and lies. Any web log may contain the latest information of the year, or equally, a made-up story that you will never be able to check. 80. Maybe the time has come to do something about it, and I don’t just mean changing your choice of TV channel or newspaper. In a world where everyone wants you to listen to their version, you only have two choices: switch off altogether or start looking for sources you can trust. The investigative journalist of the future is everyone who wants to know the truth.

As a wrestler, I know how much fun it is to win. In fact, there are few things that I enjoy 81 . However, I think it is important that we teach athletes how to love a sport and enjoy it for all it has to offer. Competitiveness is great, 82 sometimes the pressure of being the best can overload teenagers.
I see and hear wrestlers day in and day out talk about how hard 83 is to love the sport because of the demands it takes to be the best. Pressure to win 84 (put) upon wrestlers in many different ways. For example, our coach is a great coach, and I know that he cares 85 every one of his wrestlers, but every time that I walk out on that mat, I hear his words echoing (回响) in my mind: “You are a West Lincoln wrestler; and you will win.” How can I 86 feel pressure to win, and pain after losing, with that in mind? So if I do lose, I go home and cry because I feel that I 87 (let) my coach and myself down. However, this doesn’t last long because homework has to be done, and I have to sleep sometime,
88 . Then there is the never-ending concern with making weight for next match.
I remember how much fun wrestling was in eighth grade, even though I did not win a single match. I always loved practices, and I always thought they ended too quickly. I know I would 89 wrestling if decide to quit. I just wish I could return to the 90 when making weight was not a problem and when losing did not matter as long as I gave 100 percent. 短文改错和书面表达见答题卷

The intelligence of the elephant is wide known. We say “the elephant never forgets”. Elephants are also surprisingly good at solve problems. A Indian farmer keeping elephants discovered this fact. He had noticed that his elephants are eating his bananas at night. No fence could keep them out, but he decided to tie bells onto them. Then he would hear them when they came to eat the bananas and he could drive them away. Several mornings late, however, the bananas were all gone, though he had heard everything at night.
