Ⅰ.The Analysis of Teaching Material
The main topic of unit 8 is adventure. Students will be introduced adventure and related matters, such as travel, exploration and extreme sports. This lesson is the beginning of this unit. It is a reading passage. It plays a very important part in the English teaching in this unit. Students can learn more about adventure, improve their reading ability and receive moral education. According to the new standard curriculum, in the reading process I will make students the real masters while the teacher acts as a director and focus on students’ long-term development and enable them to use proper reading strategies.
Ⅱ.Analysis of the students
1. Students of this stage are quick in thought, have a certain ability to read and have known something about adventure through internet and other ways.
2. Students lack vocabulary about adventure.
3. Some students are not active in class because they are afraid of making mistakes.
Ⅲ.Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Aims:
To learn some new words about adventure, for example, route, hiker, luggage and porter.
To talk about the adventure in the Himalayas.
2. Ability Aims:
To identify paragraph topics in a reading text.
To practice finding out the detailed information.
To train Ss’ ability of cooperation .
3. Emotion Aims:
To get over difficulty with courage.
To love life and try to be successful.

Many people come to for the beautiful scenery, especially for Qomolangma, the highest peak in the world. The altitude of the highest peak is about 8848 meters.

Task 1. Read the text quickly and match the paragraphs (1-7) with topics.

Task 3. Design, ask and answer.
Students are asked to read the text as carefully as they can and work in groups to design their own questions. Then they can pick up anyone in class to answer their questions.
