Derek was an 80-year-old man, who lived a happy life in a small town and had a beautiful family. His children grew up and moved to different cities. Now, Derek has four grandchildren, and they only visit him during their holidays.

One vacation, Derek was preparing his home for the kids: doing the cleaning and buying food that the children like. But it occurred to him suddenly that he lost his favorite watch, a precious present give by his wife when their first child was born. Derek treasured the watch very much, especially after his wife’s death. So he was really upset about losing it.

When he told his grandchildren after they came, they promised him they would find the watch.

One girl asked: “Grandpa, do you still have any idea when you last saw it before you lost it?”

“I am not sure, but I think when I was cleaning the back yard!” Derek replied. After looking for about two hours, they didn’t find it at all. Everybody was

pretty disappointed, but they tried to comfort their grandfather.

One grandson went back alone to the back yard to look again. While Derek asked why he was going there a second time, the little boy didn’t answer, he just asked the others to stay where they were and keep quiet.

It was 15 minutes later that he ran to his grandfather. He found the watch! Derek, together with all the other children, was surprised and asked how he found it. The little boy answered: “ I went there alone and sat there without making any noise, and the back yard was so silent that I finally heard the sound of the watch.”

Derek hugged and thanked the little boy.

A. Looked forward to his grandchildren’s visits B. didn’t clean his house often

A. He did a complete cleaning of the back yard. B. He searched the back yard carefully for two hours. C. He made no noise and followed the sound of the watch. D. He asked other children for help. 23. What can we learn from the story?

A. Love keeps us busy all the time.

B. Helping those in need makes one feel good. C. Believe in yourself and you and succeed.

D. Silence sometimes is more powerful than using your voice.

When was the last time your family sat down together to have a dinner? The speed at which we live today no longer allows for slow eating habits. Most people work long hours. There is lots of fast food and eating out is now on the increase. Often, food is eaten in front of the television in silence, or a child eats alone in front of the computer.

When I was a child, every evening around the same time, one of the children would be asked to set the table, and then we'd go and wash our hands: before the meal. This was the time of day when we would talk about our day at school. But now things have changed a lot.

A family environment plays an important role for children in learning to communicate with others and understanding table manners, such as waiting for others to finish before leaving the table and not speaking with a mouth full of food. Parents’ likes and dislikes of a certain food will also influence a child's own likes and dislikes. Studies have shown that children who often eat with their families have better results at school than children who eat with their families less than twice a week.

Regular meal times give children the chance to discuss their problems with family members. They can also learn to respect others around the table. Talking to your children over dinner is the best way of having their-trust. Children learn good eating habits from their parents at a very young age. Family meals are important. Prepare them for your children.

28. Some families eat less together because __________.

A. table manners change a lot

B. most children live in a school

C. food in the restaurant is better D. people are busy with their work

29. Children who often eat with their families _________.

A. prefer to share food with others. B. turn out to do better in their studies. C. show concerns about families. D. are interested in cooking.

30. Which word can best describe the writer's attitude towards eating together with families?

A. Doubtful. B. Supportive. C. Worried. D. Grateful. 31. Which would be the best title of the passage? A. Table manners of a family B. Why should the family eat together?

C. The importance of meals

D. How to choose food for your family?

D

Researchers have solved a long-standing mystery: why rocks on a flat lakebed in Death Valley National Park in California sometimes move. Racetrack Playa, the waterless lakebed, is named for the long trails(痕迹) that the rocks, some of which weigh hundreds of pounds, leave in the earth. .

What was one of the world’s natural wonders now appears to be the perfect combination of rain, wind, ice and sun, scientists have found. Dr. Norris and James M. Norris, a cousin and co-author, actually saw the rocks moving in December when they went to check on the project.

For their study, they used special global positioning system tools, designed by James Norris, in rocks of various sizes brought from outside the park. They were not allowed to move or change anything of the existing playa(盐湖) stones.

No river flows into the playa, though rainwater sometimes fills part of it to a depth of a few inches. It’s when this happens, and the nights are below freezing

and the days are fine, that the rocks may “sail”, the researchers said. On those occasions, the cold night air leaves a sheet of ice only an eighth of an inch thick. Then the warmth of the sun causes the sheet to break up. As more ice melts, some of these lesser sheets have room to move. Driven by light winds, the sheets push up against rocks. The wind drives the water, too, which also helps push the ice to some degree. The movement is slow, no more than about 15 feet a minute.

The movements are episodic – the conditions may be just right for a few minutes, and then the sun causes more ice to break and the movement stops. And once the water disappears, it may be years before the rocks move again, even if the playa floods again, because the right temperature and wind conditions may not occur. 32. What do we know about Racetrack Playa?

A. It has flat rocks in the earth. C. It has some valleys.

B. It is covered by rocks. D. It is usually dry.

33. What was the park’s attitude to using GPS in the lakebed’s stones?

A. It doubted the method.

D. It thought it was useless.

B. It was against doing so .

C. It felt it was worth a try.

34. Why do the stones “sail” according to the Norrises?

A. They are moved by big floods .

B. They move just because of strong winds. C. They are mainly pushed by wind-driven ice. D. They move very slowly on smooth ice sheets.

35. What does the underlined word “episodic” in the last paragraph probably mean?

A. Amazingly big. B. Extremely slow. C. Happening sometimes. D. Going on without stopping

The reason why they turned to an Internet was that books were sold a lower price online. I went directly to the bookstore but chose a suitable map after school. The next day, they also had got their maps but unlucky not the ones they wanted. The maps were bound too tightly. Now they have to return both the maps and get their money back. My husband and I spent a few weeks in London last year. We went there in autumn. We thought it was the best season to visit England. The weather was usually quite good and there were not too many tourists in October.

We stayed in a small hotel in the West End. We did most of our sightseeing on foot. We went shopping and spent a lot of money. What we liked most was going to the theater. We don’t have a lot of chances to see such wonderful plays at home. A lot of people said English food was very bad. But we didn’t think so. It was true that most of the restaurants were French, Italian or Chinese, but we had some very good meals. In fact, we enjoyed our holiday so much that we have already decided to go there again next year. We are going to take our umbrellas, though. I’m sure we will need them sooner or later.
