Great Woman

The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. He is an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester does not love him at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among minister and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time. It is sinful. Due to this, Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame. In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for a long time, with little communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter “A” day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame. The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century in American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main character, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The main role has borne a child out of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all time. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letter to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing hoe they brand sinners for life.

Dimmesdale always feels he just like a demon controlled by everything around him. He loves Hester, but due to many reasons he has no choice or courage except following the rules of the

society. However, he always hates himself, because he has no right to charge the reality of the world. He wants to meet Hester and Pear, but he is so feared that he will lose face if he meets Hester and Pear. And everyone will know the relationship between them. In that time, people just haven’t right to control everything. People always follow the rules and don’t against everything. They obey everything because of people’s thoughts have been controlled by the laws for a long time.

Hester is a good wife and mother. She loves her husband and her child especially when the society secluded her. She always lived with her child Pearl and when Pearl asks her some questions about why she always wears “A”, she just feels very ugly and doesn’t know how to say the thing to her child. So she always looks for excuses, but the burdens on her shoulder are heavily enough that she always loses her aims or hopes in life. Fortunately, Pearl gives her light. The love she gives Pearl is worth more than everything in the world. Pearl lives a very happiness life. However, Pearl is just a child and she just doesn’t know the cruel of the world and when she grows a little order, she also feels a little that the other persons’words or deeds towards them are very different. The world is cold. Everyone is indifferent to them. To Hester, running away or removing the letter would be an acknowledgment of society’s power over her. She would be admitting that the letter is a mark of shame and something from which she desires to escape. Instead, Hester stays, refiguring the scarlet letter as a symbol of her own experience and character. Her past sin is a part of herself. Thus, Hester very determinedly integrates her sin into he life. From her let me know that diligence outstrips poverty. If you have great talents, industry will help improve them; if you have but moderate abilities, industry will

supply their deficiency. Hester is full of youthful vigor, she is diligent and modest and skill. And also let me know the real happiness lies in the fruit of labor produced by one’s sweat and toil. Diligence redeems stupidity. Hard work conquers all things. Happiness consists in contentment. Happy is who knows his follies in his youth. It is those who have brought happiness to the people that will feel the happiest themselves. Roger Chilling wants to kill Dimmesdale, so he uses every ways that he can to press Dimmesdale to devil. Those in favor of capital punishment are motivated only by a desire for revenge and retaliation. The important thing in life is to have a great aim, and the determination to attain it.

Hester always have a good mood to enjoy the flowers when they are in bloom with her child Pearl. Reading to here, just let me think of man like every other animal is by nature indolent. If nothing spurs him on, then he will hardly think, and will behave from habit like a machine.

The town’s poor seem to me when often to live the most independent lives of any. May be they are simply great enough to receive without misgiving. Most think that they are above being supported by the town; but it often happens that they are not above supporting themselves by dishonest means, which should be more disreputable.

Cultivate poverty like a garden herb, like sage. No not trouble yourself much to get new thing, whether clothes or friends, turn the old, return to them. Things do not change, we change.

Sells your clothes and keep your thoughts. When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survives, the tenderness will leave her. Hester’s charitable deeds and

quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth, always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment, but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able.”

There is a saying that goes like this: Capital punishment should be a major deterrent. Other strict law should also be put into practice. Those who are lenient to criminals are unkind to innocent people. Capital punishment should be a major deterrent. Emphasis should be put on the reform of criminals.

From this story let me know that however mean our life is, meet and love it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not as bad as we are. It looks poorest when we are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise. Love our life, poor as it is. We may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-hours as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its’ door as early as in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in a paradise. In the end, Hester's strength, honesty, and compassion carry her through a life she had not imagined. While Dimmesdale dies after his public confession and Chillingworth dies consumed by his own hatred and revenge, Hester lives on, quietly. The scarlet letter made her what she became, and, in the end, she grew stronger and

more at peace through her suffering.

However, after Hester dies, she shares a single tombstone with Dimmesdale, with a deep colored letter “A” shining

brightly.

In our life, we should never give up, never lose hope, we should have faith. It allows us to cope. Trying time will pass. As we always do. Just have patience. We can overcome every kind of difficult in our life. If we would ever accomplish anything in life, let us not forget that we must persevere just like Hester who keeps the secret for a long time. At this time, the red “A” is not only the symbol of adultery and shame; it represents her intelligence in the life, and the persistent pursuit of love, and kind heart to around people. She also wears the red “A” until death. We have to say Hester is a great woman and mother.
