Infant Observation

Weekly seminars for one year

Aims and Objectives: The Infant Observation creates an opportunity, in a set situation, to observe the beginning and development of an object relationship and the developing relationship between infant and mother. This allows the candidate to observe without interpreting, to contain the countertransference and to think about the beginning of relationships. In Infant Observations, many elements are present which later have an important bearing on the candidate’s training, eg containment, reflective capacity, attunement and empathy.

Candidates will attend a series of introductory seminars, which will outline the arrangements for the Infant Observations prior to commencing the observation. Candidates will then join a small weekly seminar group with an allocated Infant Observation seminar leader. Candidates make weekly observations, which they document and report in turn in the group. The candidate may choose whichever observation he/she wishes to discuss with the group. There is an expectation that over the year of observation the presentations will show the unfolding development of the infant.

A candidate would be expected to show some capacity to observe behaviour and affective states in an infant, mother, possibly other family members, and within themselves as observer and to describe these during the observational year in something of a sequential order or in general trends.

The primary task in the Infant Observation year is for the candidate to begin to think beyond the turmoil of the experience and the manifest content of behaviour, and towards the underlying significance and meaning.
