Sometimes other conditions, such as a severe cough, are also present, and people wonder whether they have just caught a cold or arc suffering from flu. 3. Stephen Hawking was the most remarkable author. In 1982, I had responsibility for his third academic book for the Press, Superspace And Supergravity. This was a messy collection of papers from a technical workshop on how to create a new theory of
gravity. While that book was in production, I suggested he try something easier: a popular book about the nature of the Universe, suitable for the general market. Stephen thought over my suggestion.
试卷第3页,总15页
He already had an international reputation as a brilliant theoretical physicist. He had concerns about financial matters: importantly, it was impossible for him to obtain any form of life insurance to protect his family in the event of his death or becoming totally dependent on nursing care.
So he took precious time out from his research to prepare the rough draft of a book and decided to write with a more personal approach. His area of interest had “become so
technical that only a very small number of specialists could master the mathematics”. For a starting point, he took some themes from a course of advanced lectures that he had recently given at Harvard University.
In the 1980s, my office and Stephen’s were in the same courtyard. One afternoon he invited me to take a look at the first draft, but first he wanted to discuss cash. He insisted that it had to be on sale, up front, at all airport bookshops in the UK and the US. I told him that was a tough call for a university press. Then I thumbed the draft. However, the text was far too technical for a general reader. A few weeks later he showed me a revision, still littered with equations (方程式). He eventually removed all except one, E =
mc . And he decided, fortunately, to place it with a mass market publisher rather than a university press. Bantam published A Brief History of Time in March, 1988.
Sale took off like a rocket, and it ranked as a bestseller for at least five years. The book’s impact on the popularization of science has been incalculable.
(1)Why did the writer advise Stephen to try a popular book?________ A.Because he was familiar with Stephen.
B.Because Stephen could write in his personal way. C.Because Stephen often gave advanced lectures.
D.Because few people could understand Stephen’s theory.
(2)Stephen was concerned about money because he________. A.wanted to buy life insurance. B.had family responsibility.
C.needed money to cure his illness. D.spent much time on his research.
(3)What did the writer think of Stephen’s first draft?________ A.Disappointing. B.Appealing. C.Messy. D.Easy.
(4)What would be the best title for the text?________ A.A man of great achievements.
B.An introduction of A Brief History of Time. C.A book that made Stephen Hawking a star.
D.Stephen Hawking, a brilliant theoretical physicist. 【答案】 D B A C

4. Just 20 years ago, we had not discovered a single planet outside our solar
system. Now we know of more than 3, 000 of them, and we know nearly every star in the night sky has at least one planet in its orbit. Seth Shostak, the senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, says “One in five or one in six might be a planet similar to the Earth.”
Our study shows us many worlds possess the ingredients necessary for life. The moons orbiting Jupiter and Saturn, for example, feature whole subsurface oceans.
And even though these places are extremely severe environments, that doesn’t mean as much as we might once have thought it did; recent discoveries on Earth itself demonstrate that life is much tougher than we thought. We’ve found organisms in extremely hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, under the most terrible pressures in the deep ocean, in dry desert like the Atacama Desert (Similar to Mars). These “extremophiles” don’t need a warm home﹣in fact, they have already evolved to live in environments as severe as those on other planets. If there’s life in most of those places, “it’s going to be pond scum (浮垢), ” says Shostak. “It shows that biology is all over.”
And where there’s biology, there may well be intelligence, and life can evolve faster than we ever expected. Millions of years is only the blink of an eye. Blink fast, and you’ll miss that pond scum turning into an intelligent civilization sending out messages, looking for friends.
And we could one day find those messages and send a reply. New technology gives us a better chance to actually make contact with aliens. That’s why, in the past few
years, Shostak has continually bet a cup of coffee with everyone he knows that humans will find aliens by around 2029. “We’d have to be ________ if we interested in this, ” says Penelope Boston, the director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute.
